Barnes & Noble, Microsoft form partnership for new digital content services

Barnes & Noble and Microsoft have had their differences in the courtroom over the past year or so, but the two companies have settled those disagreements and have formed a new partnership to provide digital content and develop digital reading technologies. The new spin-off company joins Barnes & Noble's digital content and College businesses together, and is getting the benefit of a $300 million investment from Microsoft.

Third gen Apple iPad arrives in 9 more countries, 57 markets worldwide

Apple's third generation iPad is now being offered in 9 new markets: Colombia, Estonia, India, Israel, Latvia, Lithuania, Montenegro, South Africa, and Thailand, bringing the number of markets that the tablet is available in to 57. Foursquare for BlackBerry gains NFC check-in capabilities

Foursquare updated its app for BlackBerry smartphones today, adding the ability to check in to a location using the phone's NFC features. Users can tap their BlackBerry phone (provided it has NFC, of course) on NFC stickers to check in to locations, and they can share places and tips over NFC with other BlackBerry or Android users. The app also features improved GPS performance, faster speed, and notifications in the main BlackBerry inbox. Foursquare for BlackBerry is free and available in the BlackBerry App World now.

Ban on all cellphone use while driving proposed for the U.S.

A federal ban on all cellphone use while operating a motor vehicle in the U.S. has been proposed by Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. The proposed ban applies to any vehicle on any road in any state and covers both talking and texting with a cellphone.

AT&T bringing 4G LTE service to Salt Lake City this year

AT&T has announced that it plans to launch 4G LTE service in Salt Lake City, Utah this year. The carrier claims that its LTE service offers network speeds up to ten times faster than 3G service. Salt Lake City is one of a number of markets that AT&T has expanded the service to recently, including Akron and Canton, Ohio, and Lafayette, Ind. The carrier did not say exactly when the service would be available in Salt Lake City, other than that it is arriving later this year. Once the network live in Salt Lake City, AT&T will have about 36 markets with LTE coverage

Draw Something now available for the Amazon Kindle Fire

Draw Something, the immensely popular social Pictionary clone, is now available in the Amazon Appstore on the Kindle Fire tablet. Draw Something recently announced that it reached 50 million downloads in 50 days on the Android and iOS platforms, and it will likely notch a few million more on the Kindle Fire. For the unaware, Draw Something is a turn-based game where players are given words that they have to turn into pictures, which the other player will guess the word from. It is available in both paid and free versions, with the paid version costing $1.99 in the Amazon Appstore

LG brings the Optimus LTE to new markets, renames it to Optimus True HD LTE

LG has announced that it is launching the Optimus LTE smartphone in new markets in Europe and Asia, following its deployment in Korea, Japan, Canada, and the U.S. Additionally, it is renaming the device to Optimus True HD LTE, though it still has the same 1280 x 720 pixel IPS display as before.

Samsung beats Nokia in cellphone shipments for the first time, says Strategy Analytics

Samsung's record first quarter financial performance was enough to push it ahead of Nokia in global cellphone shipments for the first time, according to a report by Strategy Analytics. Additionally, Strategy Analytics claims that Samsung took the number one smartphone supplier crown from Apple once again this quarter after losing it in Q4 2011.
