Google now activates 850,000 Android devices every day Posted: 27 Feb 2012 04:21 AM PST Google's vice president of mobile, Andy Rubin, has just revealed that the company is activating over 850,000 Android smartphones and tablets every day. This is a jump up from the 700,000 per day figure that was announced late last year and shows that the Android ecosystem is continuing to grow at an aggressive rate. Read the full story here. |
Windows Phone 7.5 "Tango" to include support for NFC Posted: 27 Feb 2012 04:20 AM PST Microsoft hasn't talked too much about the latest update for its Windows Phone operating system, codenamed Tango, other than that it supports 256MB of RAM and lower-cost Qualcomm processors, but ZTE might have outed the company's plans to support NFC in the platform. According to ZTE, its recently announced Orbit smartphone runs the Tango version of Windows Phone and includes support for Near Field Communications. This is the first time that we have seen NFC utilized in Windows Phone, though it has been rumored to be coming for some time. Read the full story here. |

The Xperia U features a small 3.5-inch Reality Display with Sony's Mobile BRAVIA technology. Nokia Lumia 900 smartphone headed to global markets with dual-cell HSPA Posted: 27 Feb 2012 12:16 AM PST Nokia has announced that the Lumia 900 Windows Phone smartphone originally announced for AT&T at CES 2012 will be launched globally in Q2 2012. The global version of the Lumia 900 won't have 4G LTE, but it has new dual-cell HSPA support that Nokia says offers data speeds twice as fast as traditional HSPA services. Microsoft lowers hardware requirements for Windows Phone smartphones Posted: 27 Feb 2012 12:06 AM PST During Nokia's press conference at Mobile World Congress 2012, Microsoft announced that the Window s Phone operating system is now available for lower specification hardware. The minimum memory requirement is down from 512MB to 256MB, and Windows Phone is now compatible with slower Qualcomm 7x27 processors. The first smartphone to take advantage of Microsoft's lower requirements will be the Nokia Lumia 610. It has a 4.3-inch, qHD AMOLED display and unibody aluminum construction. The finish of the One S is a unique matte texture that has a ceramic type of feel to it. The One S is also incredibly thin at less than 8mm thick. Powering the One S is a dual-core, Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor clocked at 1.5GHz. The One S has Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich with HTC's new Sense 4.0 interface. HTC plans to release the One S globally in April. A version of the One S will be launched on T-Mobile in the U.S., though an exact release date has not yet been announced. Watch the video here. |

The Xperia P sports a 4-inch Reality Display with Mobile BRAVIA technology and Sony's new WhiteMagic tech that is said to greatly improve outdoor visibility. It has an aluminum body and is powered by a dual-core 1GHz processor. The smaller Xperia U has a 3.5-inch display and dual-core 1GHz processor, though it lacks the new WhiteMagic feature. It features a 4.7-inch, 720p HD display and is powered by a quad-core NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor clocked at 1.5GHz. It is constructed of unibody polycarbonate, and has an 8 megapixel camera with 1080p HD video capture. The One X runs Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich with HTC's new Sense 4.0 interface with ImageSense camera features. HTC will launch the One X globally in April. HTC to launch Windows Phone Apollo devices later this year Posted: 26 Feb 2012 04:37 PM PST Though HTC's announcements here at Mobile World Congress have been all about Android, the company still has Windows Phone on its radar. During an interview with MobileBurn, HTC chief product manager Kouji Kodera said that HTC plans to release new Windows Phone devices when Microsoft releases the next version of its platform, code-named Apollo, later this year. Kodera said that HTC has not decided on the branding for the new Windows Phone devices yet, so we don't know if they will be part of the newly-announced One line of smartphones or something else. The HTC Titan II LTE Windows Phone was announced for AT&T back at CES 2012, though it is likely that the new Windows Phone devices will be different from what we have seen thus far. HTC also noted that it intends to bring the Titan II to other LTE markets across the world later this year. Read the full story here. |

The One S will also be the first Android smartphone from T-Mobile that will ship with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich pre-installed when it hits shelves in the spring of this year. The One S will also be the very first HTC device for T-Mobile to feature its Sense 4.0 user interface, which includes improved Beats Audio integration for great sound from all music sources. HTC One X for AT&T to lack quad-core processor, but gain 4G LTE Posted: 26 Feb 2012 12:46 PM PST At its press event in Barcelona for Mobile World Congress 2012, HTC just confirmed that the AT&T version of its new HTC One X flagship smartphone will sport a dual-core Qualcomm processor instead of the global version's quad-core processor. The AT&T version gets the older processor in order to be able to accommodate support for AT&T's 4G LTE data network. The global HTC One X version is not capable of supporting LTE data. HTC Vivid to gain Beats Audio, updated Sense interface with Android 4.0 ICS update Posted: 26 Feb 2012 12:46 PM PST AT&T and HTC have revealed that the Vivid smartphone for AT&T will gain Beats Audio integration and an updated Sense interface when it gets upgraded to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich later this year. As with the recently announced One X, the Beats Audio profiles on the Vivid will work on either native or streaming audio files and offer an enhanced audio experience over standard phones. Sony Xperia S hits European markets this week Posted: 26 Feb 2012 10:24 AM PST Sony Mobile Communications has revealed during its press conference here at Mobile World Congress 2012 that the Xperia S smartphone will hit European markets this week. The Xperia S was originally unveiled at CES 2012 earlier this year, and features 4.3-inch, 720p HD display, dual-core 1.5GHz processor, 12 megapixel camera, and Android 2.3 Gingerbread with Sony's custom user interface. It also has a unique clear notification bar below the display that illuminates in different colors when an alert comes in. Video: LG Optimus 4X HD quad-core smartphone video from MWC 2012 Posted: 26 Feb 2012 09:20 AM PST The LG Optimus 4X HD is LG\'s new flagship smartphone. It features a quad-core 1.5GHz NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor and features a 720p HD resolution IPS touchscreen that measures 4.7 inches across the diagonal. The phone\'s main 8 megapixel camera can record full HD 1080p while the forward facing 1.3 megapixel camera can be use for vide calls. The 4X HD measures only 8.9mm thanks in part to a new battery technology that LG used for its 2150mAh battery. The phone will be available in the second quarter of 2012. Watch the video here. |
