Chrome Beta for Android updated with TypeKit support

Google updated its Chrome Beta browser for Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich devices today. While there isn't a changelog available for the update in the Android Market, reports suggest that pages load faster than before, though we have not seen improvements on our own devices. It does appear that the browser now supports the TypeKit font system, though. The updated Chrome Beta for Android is free and available in the Android Market now.

Netflix has no plans to support PlayBook or other BlackBerry devices

Today Netflix announced that it has no plans to develop an application to support the BlackBerry PlayBook or any other BlackBerry device according to an update on the company's Twitter account: "We don't have any current plans to support BlackBerry devices, including PlayBook."

Microsoft Apps update brings Office to Nokia Belle smartphones

Today Nokia announced that this week an update to Nokia's Symbian Belle smartphone OS will begin rolling out that includes Microsoft Apps, the first wave of Microsoft Office integration applications for the platform. Included in this initial update are OneNote, Microsoft's Lync 2010 messaging system, the Document Connection app for managing all of your phone's documents, and the PowerPoint Broadcast application, which lets users share presentations through their phones. Microsoft Apps are available for the Nokia E7, Nokia C7, Nokia C6-01, Nokia X7, Nokia Oro, Nokia 700, Nokia 701, Nokia 603 right away, with future support for the Nokia N8, Nokia E6 and Nokia 500 coming.

Fraunhofer IIS offers full-HD voice calls on Android smartphones over 4G LTE

Fraunhofer IIS, best known as the inventor of the MP3 file format, has announced the first full-HD voice call capabilities with Android smartphones connected to LTE networks. Full-HD voice calls offer superior clarity and sound quality over standard voice calls.

ViewSonic outs Apple-inspired smartphones and tablets

ViewSonic has apparently been studying Apple's spec sheets, as its latest smartphone, the ViewPhone 4s, not only cribs Apple's naming scheme for the iPhone 4S, it also matches its display size and resolution. The company also outed a couple of other smartphones and tablets ahead of Mobile World Congress.

Visa and Samsung launch NFC mobile payments for London Olympics and Paralympics

Visa and Samsung have announced that they are partnering to launch the official mobile payments application for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The system uses Visa's payWave system and will work with NFC capable smartphones. Visa claims that there will be more than 3,000 ~NFC contactless payment point of sale terminals installed across the venues for the two events.

Qualcomm reigns supreme in smartphone processor market, claims Strategy Analytics

According to a report released by Strategy Analytics, Qualcomm took the title as leader in the race for the most smartphone processors shipped for the first time in 2011. Texas Instruments had held that title for some time.

Readability app headed to iPhone and iPad next week

Readability, a company that makes it easier to read articles online by stripping the formatting from webpages, has announced that its long-awaited iOS app for the iPhone and iPad will arrive next week. The app offers an easy way to read online articles on mobile devices and allows users to save articles for later viewing. Expect it to hit the App Store for free on March 1.

Apple purchases app recommendation engine Chomp

According to TechCrunch, Apple has purchased Chomp, an app recommendation engine that allows users to find apps based on what they actually do, not just their name. Chomp currently offers both iOS and Android apps that serve this purpose, and it also has a deal with Verizon Wireless to power Verizon's own app store search features. It is speculated that Apple will use Chomp's expertise to improve the app recommendation and search features in the iTunes App Store, which, to be honest, are quite lacking at this point. It is not clear what will happen to Chomp's Android app or to its deal with Verizon.

Apple suspends push email services in German as result of Motorola case

Apple has suspended push email services for its iCloud and MobileMe customers in Germany as a result of a court ruling in its patent infringement case with Motorola. Earlier this month, the courts ruled that Apple's services were infringing upon Motorola's patents for push email service. Push services are still available for contacts and calendar updates, but users will have to rely on the slower fetch option for their email. Apple does note that this only affects users who live in or travel to Germany and that it is appealing the court's decision because it feels the patent is invalid.

Dropbox for Android gains automatic photo upload feature

Cloud storage and file syncing provider Dropbox has updated its app for Android smartphones and tablets with a new automatic photo upload feature. Not unlike the automatic upload offered in the Google+ app, any photos captured with a device will be instantly uploaded to the user's Dropbox account, whether they are connected to Wi-Fi or cellular data.

Chinese company sues Apple in the U.S. over use of iPad trademark

Proview, the Chinese company that successfully won against Apple in Chinese courts over the use of the iPad name but failed to get an injunction enforced, has taken its case to the U.S. Proview has filed a lawsuit against Apple claiming trademark infringement and accusing Apple of fraud in California.

Google Music performing poorer than expected, claims CNET sources

According to a report by CNET, Google Music, Google's answer to Apple's iTunes and Amazon's MP3 store that launched in beta last summer and went public in November, is not performing quite as well as Google expected it to out of the gate.
