Twitter updated for iPhone and Android smartphones and tablets

Twitter has announced that it has released new updates of its iPhone and Android applications. Twitter now gives iPhone users the ability to copy/paste tweet text, the option to copy/mail/tweet links within a tweet, change font settings, and mark direct messages as read. For Android users, Twitter is now optimized for Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich devices as well as the Amazon Kindle Fire and Barnes & Noble's NOOK family of Android tablets. Both Android and iPhone users also gain a new swipe shortcut from the timeline for easy retweeting and replying, and also a confirmation alert for "find friends." The update for the iPhone is available now in the App Store while Android users can head over to the Android Market for their own.

Skype app updated for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch users

Skype has updated its VoIP and video chat application for Apple iOS devices to version 3.7. The update brings new chat and dialpad views for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch users and includes various bug fixes and stability improvements as well. It is available now free of charge from the Apple iTunes App Store.

LightSquared to lay off 45 percent of workforce

LightSquared has revealed plans to lay off about 45 percent of its workforce in light of its failure to gain approval for its proposed 4G LTE network. "This and other cost savings measures will allow LightSquared to continue to navigate the regulatory process as it works with the appropriate government agencies to find solutions to the GPS interference issue and bring its $14 billion privately funded wireless broadband network to more than 260 million Americans," said LightSquared in a statement provided to Reuters. The cuts will come from its staff of about 330 people. Despite the cuts to its working staff, LightSquared says that it is not considering bankruptcy at this time.

Kickstarter project guarantees you won't damage your iPhone 4/4S

There is no shortage of Kickstarter projects to develop new cases for Apple's iPhone 4 and 4S, but a new one called cellhelmet promises that it is so tough that you will not be able to break the phone inside of it. The creators of cellhelmet even go as far as to insure customers' iPhones for a year after purchase of the case.

Many developers earning more from Amazon Appstore than Google's Market, claims Distimo

Today app analytics firm Distimo released a report that highlights the successes of Amazon's Appstore in the world of Android applications. The report compares the Appstore's performance with the Google owned Android Market, and finds that the Appstore is actually generating more income for many developers than the Market and that it is growing faster.

Ubuntu Linux coming to multi-core Android smartphones, tablets this year

Canonical, developer of the Ubuntu version of Linux for desktops, has announced that it will be releasing a version of Ubuntu for Android devices this year. Ubuntu for Android is not unlike the Webtop feature that Motorola offers with a number of its smartphones, as it allows a full desktop experience with a docked mobile device.

BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0: RIM's effort to keep up with the Joneses

RIM released the long-awaited PlayBook OS 2.0 update for its BlackBerry PlayBook tablet device today, and has addressed some of the failings that the platform has had to live with since its launch last April. The new update includes such basic apps as a dedicated email client, contact app, and calendar app, and also has support for Android apps through the BlackBerry App World. RIM has also thrown in an updated home screen layout and some other tweaks, but all of this leads us to ask: will anyone that doesn't already own a PlayBook tablet be swayed by RIM's moves?

Over 50 million MHL-compatible HD mobile devices shipped in 2011

The MHL Consortium, the group responsible for the spec that enables mobile devices to output full 1080p HD video through a micro-USB port, has announced that over 50 million MHL-compatible devices were shipped in 2011. The Mobile High-definition Link (MHL) spec allows smartphones and tablets to output full HD video with up to 7.1 channel audio using a small adapter that also provides a charge back to the mobile device. The consortium was founded by a group of companies that includes Nokia and Samsung.

U.S. Cellular picks up Samsung Galaxy S II smartphone

Samsung and U.S. Cellular have announced that the Galaxy S II smartphone will be headed to the regional carrier in the near future. The Galaxy S II features a dual-core, 1.2GHz Samsung Exynos processor, a 4.5-inch Super AMOLED Plus display, an 8 megapixel camera with 1080p video, and Android 2.3 Gingerbread. It will be available soon for $229.99 with a new two-year contract.

Three UK has announced that it will offer Samsung's recently unveiled smartphones, the Galaxy Ace 2 and Galaxy mini 2, in the near future. Three did not say how much the new phones would cost, nor did it provide an exact release date for them. The Galaxy Ace 2 and Galaxy mini 2 are successors to the Galaxy Ace and Galaxy mini that were released last year.

RIM releases BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 with email and Android apps

This morning, RIM released version 2.0 of the BlackBerry PlayBook OS for its BlackBerry PlayBook tablet. The new version includes native email, contact, and calendar apps, complete with integrated social networking from Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. It also has a new BlackBerry Bridge app that allows BlackBerry smartphone owners to use their smartphones as remotes for their PlayBooks. Finally, BlackBerry PlayBook 2.0 includes a new BlackBerry App World that supports Android apps that have been ported over to work on the PlayBook. The update to version 2.0 is available as a free over-the-air download and weighs in at 410MB. Check back later in the day for a closer look at BlackBerry PlayBook 2.0 once we have gotten our hands dirty with it.
