Apple iPhone 4S, 4, 3GS are the top selling U.S. smartphones in Q4 2011 Posted: 06 Feb 2012 02:07 PM PST According to a new report by NPD on smartphone buyers in the U.S., Apple's three iPhone models took the number one, two, and three slots for top selling smartphones during Q4 2011. Sprint offers web tool to show when iDEN towers get turned off Posted: 06 Feb 2012 12:02 PM PST Included within Sprint's grand plan to transition to a 4G LTE network in the near future is the practice of slowly shutting down the iDEN network that currently runs its Nextel services. Sprint has been transitioning its push-to-talk users to a CDMA-based system for the past year so that it can free up the spectrum that iDEN currently occupies (800MHz block). As a courtesy to the users still utilizing the iDEN network, Sprint has set up a website that has information as to when it plans to deactivate the iDEN towers. To start, Seattle and San Francisco will see tower reductions in April, followed by New York City in May, and Miami in June. Sprint notes that the iDEN service is not being totally shut down, but customers can expect to see reduced coverage areas. The carrier's CDMA network is unaffected by these tower reductions. Verizon, Redbox partner to bring movies to mobile devices Posted: 06 Feb 2012 08:30 AM PST DVD rental leader Redbox and Verizon have announced a new joint partnership that will bring streaming movies to mobile devices. The joint venture pairs Redbox's DVD and Blu-ray disc rental program with Verizon's ability to deliver streaming and on-demand content. The program is due to be available in the second half of this year, but it is not year clear what the technical criteria for mobile access will be. If we were to guess, we would assume that the new service will only be available to Verizon-branded mobile devices when it launches. Read the full story here. |
KAYAK drops support for BlackBerry app Posted: 06 Feb 2012 08:07 AM PST Popular travel search site KAYAK has announced that it is dropping support for the BlackBerry version of its mobile app. Citing the fact that the current BlackBerry platform is "not working out to be a great channel for consumer mobile applications," Kayak says that the cost to maintain and support the BlackBerry version of its app is just too great to maintain. The company does note that its mobile website works in the BlackBerry web browser, and that it is continuing its support for its iPhone, Android, and Windows Phone apps. Read the full story here. |

Nokia explains its ClearBlack AMOLED display technology Posted: 06 Feb 2012 07:16 AM PST One of the defining features of Nokia's recent handsets is their ClearBlack AMOLED displays, which offer great color reproduction and work very well in outdoor light. Samsung Galaxy Note with AT&T LTE now available for pre-order Posted: 06 Feb 2012 06:23 AM PST AT&T has put its 4G LTE version of the Samsung Galaxy Note smartphone/tablet hybrid up for pre-order. The Galaxy Note features a massive 5.3-inch, 1280 x 800 pixel Super AMOLED display and support for Samsung's unique S Pen interface. AT&T is offering it in white or cobalt blue, and anxious customers can plunk down $299 and sign a new two-year contract to pre-order the device. Samsung announces white Google Galaxy Nexus for UK consumers Posted: 06 Feb 2012 05:58 AM PST Samsung today announced that the Galaxy Nexus smartphone that it produces for Google is will be available in the UK this month. The Galaxy Nexus was the first device on the market to run Google's Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system. The new white model, which features the same specs as the original, including a 4.65-inch 720p resolution display and dual-core processor, will be widely available in retail stores across the UK starting on February 13. Nokia makes white Lumia 800 smartphone official Posted: 06 Feb 2012 05:34 AM PST After a bit of back and forth and a dash of controversy last week, Nokia has come clean and officially announced the white version of the Lumia 800. Like the white version of the Nokia N9 that debuted last year, the Lumia 800's glossy white color cannot be scratched off because it is embedded into the smartphone's polycarbonate body. Facebook to add "featured stories" ads to its mobile apps by March Posted: 06 Feb 2012 05:13 AM PST According to the Financial Times, social giant Facebook will start running advertisements in its mobile applications before the company's planned stock initial public offering (IPO) in March. The FT says that the first round of mobile ads will run as "featured stories" in users' streams, and could include rich media, such as audio and video. Read the full story here. |
