Nokia Lumia 710 now on sale in the UK

Nokia has announced via its Twitter page that its Lumia 710 smartphone is now on sale in the UK. The Lumia 710 is the less expensive brother of the Lumia 800 that offers users a 3.7-inch, WVGA ClearBlack LCD display and is powered by a 1.4Ghz Qualcomm processor running Microsoft's Windows Phone platform. Microsoft soon to test Skype beta for Windows Phone

According to reports from Microsoft employees, the company has begun internal testing of a beta version of Skype for Windows Phone. Microsoft purchased Skype last year for a stunning $8.5 billion, but it has yet to add Skype support to its own mobile platform.

Senate joins Justice Department in looking into Verizon spectrum deals

The Senate has launched an investigation of its own into Verizon Wireless' recent spectrum acquisitions from cable companies. The Justice Department has already started investigating the deals to determine if Verizon is amassing too much spectrum and preventing competition from acquiring it.

Casio G'zOne Commando gains push-to-talk powers with latest update

Verizon Wireless has released a software update for the Casio G'zOne Commando rugged smartphone that adds the ability to make push-to-talk phone calls. Owners will be able to take advantage of Verizon's PTT services at no additional monthly charge (PTT usually costs $4.99 per month in addition to a voice plan). Additionally, the update replaces the V CAST video app with the newer Verizon Video app, and addresses performance issues and bugs in the device. Users should get a notification on their Commandos when the software update is ready to be downloaded and installed.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 with 4G LTE headed to U.S. Cellular next month

In addition to the Samsung Galaxy S Aviator smartphone, U.S. Cellular announced that the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 will be its first 4G LTE tablet on offer when it arrives next month. The LTE version of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 appears to be the same as the model carried by Verizon Wireless since this past fall, and features Android 3.2 Honeycomb. An exact release date and price has yet to be announced.

U.S. Cellular has announced that the Samsung Galaxy S Aviator will be its first 4G LTE smartphone when its new network launches next month. The Galaxy S Aviator runs Android 2.3.6 Gingerbread and sports a 4.3-inch display.

Firefox 10 for Android out with geeky new features

Yesterday Mozilla released version 10 of its Firefox browser for Android devices. Included in the update are a number of new features for web developers, such as anti-aliasing for WebGL and accelerated layers for OpenGL, as well as new using-facing features like improved Firefox Sync setup. In all, this should add up to a better performing browser, but if you were looking for Adobe Flash support with this upgrade, you will be disappointed - it's still not there. We haven't really been impressed with Firefox for Android so far, but if you want to give the latest version a spin, head on over to the Android Market and get your download on.

AT&T finally outs Android 2.3 Gingerbread update for Samsung Infuse 4G

AT&T has finally released the long-awaited Android 2.3 Gingerbread software upgrade for the Samsung Infuse 4G that was released last spring. The upgrade brings all of the improvements one would expect by jumping from Android 2.2 Froyo to 2.3 Gingerbread, including improved copy and paste, better battery management, and better overall performance. The Infuse 4G is getting a few other usability tweaks and bug fixes with the update as well. Unfortunately, this upgrade is not available over-the-air, so users will have plug their phones into a PC and use Samsung's upgrade software to complete the update. Own a Mac? Better look for a friend with a Windows PC, because Samsung's software isn't available for Macs at this time.

Verizon rolls out software update for HTC Rezound with signal, audio improvements

Verizon Wireless is dishing out a software update to the HTC Rezound smartphone that improves performance in a number of key areas. Most notable are reported improvements to the phone's signal strength and in-call audio quality, but there are other bug fixes and tweaks included as well. And no, this is not the upgrade to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich that has been promised to be coming. Users should get a notification on their handsets when the update is ready to be downloaded and installed, and Verizon says that it may take a few days for the update to reach everybody.

Barnes & Noble's "patent misuse" complaint against Microsoft stymied by ITC

The International Trade Commission has thrown a wrench into Barnes & Noble's plans to take down Microsoft, as it has apparently thrown the book seller's patent misuse complaint out before it even went to trial. Barnes & Noble had filed a complaint last year that not only questioned the validity of Microsoft's patents, but took issue with the way that Microsoft is forcing Android device makers into patent licensing agreements.

LG Mobile shows Q4 2011 profit on 17.7 million phones shipped

LG released its Q4 and year-end 2011 performance reports, and though 2011 started with three disappointing quarters for the company's mobile phone division, the mobile business did manage to turn a profit in the fourth quarter.

Samsung Galaxy S III to be launched after Mobile World Congress

It has been widely speculated that Samsung would launch the Galaxy S III, the next generation of its flagship Galaxy S smartphone line, at the Mobile World Congress trade show at the end of February. Samsung announced the Galaxy S II there last year, so it would make sense for the company to announce it's successor there as well. According to a statement provided to TechRadar, however, it doesn't look like Samsung intends to launch the Galaxy S III at the big mobile show at all.
