Security vulnerability that affects all users found in Google Wallet

This week a security loophole was found in the Google Wallet app for Android smartphones that allows a thief to bypass the Google Wallet PIN if the phone was previously rooted. Today another new security vulnerability was discovered that gives a phone thief use of the Google Wallet prepaid card even if the phone is not rooted.

Microsoft stores stop taking Nokia Lumia 900 pre-orders

Microsoft has apparently stopped taking pre-orders for the upcoming Nokia Lumia 900 smartphone in its retail locations. The Microsoft Store started taking pre-orders a week ago, requiring interested buyers to put down a $25 deposit to secure their Lumia 900. This week, it was revealed that Microsoft was even taking pre-orders for a yet-to-be-announced white version of the phone. The orders were being taken without an official release date or even the price that the Lumia 900 will sell for when it eventually launches on AT&T. Rumors have claimed that the Lumia 900 will arrive mid-March for $99 on-contract, though neither Nokia nor AT&T have confirmed that.

Verizon issues software updates for Motorola DROID RAZR and BIONIC smartphones, XYBOARD tablets

Verizon Wireless has announced that a software update for the Motorola DROID BIONIC, DROID RAZR and DROID RAZR MAXX smartphones has been released and includes improved data connectivity and V CAST apps. In addition to the DROID RAZR updates, Verizon is also updating the XYBOARD 10.1 and 8.2 tablets with enhanced browser performance, touch response, and global roaming support. The tablet update will be followed by a second update that activates the SIM card in the XYBOARD 10.1 and 8.2 with global roaming capabilities. XYBOARD owners will then be able to access data services in over 205 countries on their tablets. The tablet updates are expected to be available in the near future.

Netflix for Android gains Facebook sharing feature in latest update

Netflix has released an update to its app for Android smartphones and tablets that includes yet another way for you to spam your Facebook friends' news feeds. The new version offers quick and easy sharing of what you are watching to Facebook, so all of your friends can know that you just discovered Downton Abbey. Netflix for Android now also features software volume controls for tablet users and improved audio and video syncing. The updated Netflix app can be downloaded for free from the Android Market now.

Vonage guns for Skype's international calling business with new mobile app

This week Vonage released a new mobile app for the iPhone and Android smartphones that offers free and discounted calling and messaging worldwide. The new Vonage Mobile app offers high-definition calling at rates that are as much as 70 percent less than carriers rates and 30 percent less than Skype's international calling plans.

HTC says Android 4.0 ICS updates for select phones will arrive by late March

HTC has announced via its official Facebook page that the first round of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich upgrades for its smartphones will arrive by the end of March. The first round of phones includes the HTC Sensation, HTC Sensation 4G, and HTC Sensation XE, with the HTC Sensation XL trailing close behind. Additionally, HTC has revealed that Ice Cream Sandwich will come for the HTC Rezound, HTC Vivid, HTC Amaze 4G, HTC EVO 3D, HTC EVO Design 4G, HTC Incredible S, HTC Desire S, and HTC Desire HD later this year.

Google confirms 2.25 percent fee for Motorola patent licensees

In a letter sent by Google to the president of the IEEE in an effort to convince him that Google's proposed purchase of Motorola would not cause any issues with patent licensing, the company indirectly confirmed the 2.25 percent royalty fee that Apple claims Motorola asks of its patent licensees. Google also said that the 2.25 percent of per unit sales fee would continue to be the maximum that it would demand from licensees when it completes the purchase of Motorola and absorbs its patent portfolio.

BBM Music available as four month free trial for U.S. customers, six months for those in the UK

RIM has launched a new promotion for its BBM Music service for BlackBerry smartphones in an effort to get more people on board with the subscription program. Normally, the service costs $4.99 per month (4.99 GBP in the UK) and offers unlimited access to up to 50 songs at one time and all of the songs that your BBM friends share with you. The new promotion offers the service for free for four months to new users in the U.S., or for six months for those in the UK. BBM Music now boasts a catalog of over 10 million tracks, so most people should be able to find the music they are looking for on it.

RIM outs BlackBerry Mobile Conferencing app version 3.0

RIM has released an upgrade to its BlackBerry Mobile Conferencing app for BlackBerry smartphones. Version 3.0 of the app offers a "Join Now" button that can be added to calendar reminders of conference calls, one-click reconnect if the call is disconnected, and new integration with BlackBerry Messenger, Facebook, and Twitter for sharing the app with others. BlackBerry Mobile Conferencing version 3.0 is free and available in the BlackBerry App World now.

Nokia Astound left out of the Nokia Belle upgrade ball

Try not to be too astounded by this news here, but it seems that the Nokia Astound, a rebadged version of the C7 Symbian smartphone that came out for T-Mobile last spring, will not be upgraded to Nokia Belle, the latest version of the Symbian platform. The Astound will remain on Symbian Anna, the version just before Belle, despite the fact that its C7 cousin will get the upgrade. It's not clear who's to blame for this, but we assume its a combination of T-Mobile, Nokia, and the fact that the upgrade to Belle is a hefty 250MB in size.

Apple will announce iPad 3 in first week of March says latest rumor

According to sources cited by All Things D, Apple will hold an event in early March to launch the iPad 3, the next generation of its hugely successful tablet. Rumors have been circulating for months that the iPad 3 will have a faster processor and an improved graphics processing chip (which is a no-brainer) as well as a high-resolution Retina Display. The general appearance of the iPad 3 is not expected to change much from the current iPad 2. As usual, Apple did not comment on the rumors of the expected launch date or specifications of the upcoming device.

iOS developers downloading iPhone contacts; users are totally unaware

There has been quite the commotion over a certain social networking app for iOS called Path this week and its practice of uploading a user's entire contact list to one of its servers. While Path has since apologized for this practice and promises to delete the stored user data, it has come to light that this is a fairly common thing among iOS developers, and it happens without the user ever knowing.

German courts keep Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1N on shelves

Samsung nabbed a victory in Germany today, as the courts determined that the reworked Galaxy Tab 10.1N looks different enough from Apple's iPad that it can be sold in stores without issue. The original Galaxy Tab 10.1 has been banned from sale in Germany because of how much it looks like the iPad, which prompted Samsung to released the redesigned 10.1N version.

Motorola MOTOLUXE smartphone launching in the UK this month

Announced in early January, the MOTOLUXE smartphone from Motorola will first land in the UK later this month according to Motorola. The MOTOLUXE offers a slab form factor with a large 4-inch FWVGA (480x854 pixel) touchscreen display and runs Google's Android 2.3 Gingerbread OS. The device also sports a 5MP camera with flash around back as well as a VGA user facing camera for video chats. The MOTOLUXE has a few unique features like a large and customizable notification light that does double duty as a lanyard loop. Motorola also has thrown in its MotoSwitch user interface, which lets the phone learn the habits of its user to keep pertinent information close at hand.
