NVIDIA adds LTE support to Tegra 3 quad-core processor

NVIDIA has announced that its quad-core plus one processor, the Tegra 3, now supports LTE modems. The company is partnering with modem manufacturers Renesas and GCT Semiconductor to bring the high-speed data services to devices packing its new speedy processor. NVIDIA notes that having high-speed cellular data in addition to the gaming chops that the Tegra 3 already has will offer a compelling wireless multi-player gaming experience.

Samsung outs quad-core Exynos processor

Samsung has announced the successor to its dual-core line of Exynos processors with new quad-core options on a 32nm manufacturing processes. The new chips can be clocked at up to 1.5GHz and feature Samsung's own graphics processing units as well. The company claims the new processors offer 26 percent better performance over its already-impressive existing chips, as well as up to 50 percent improvements in battery life. We hope to learn more about Samsung's new Exynos processors and possibly what devices they may show up in during Mobile World Congress next week.

Qualcomm debuts "5G" Wi-Fi compatible chip for mobile devices

Qualcomm has announced the new WCN3680 Wi-Fi/Bluetooth/FM combo chip for mobile devices that supports the "5G" 802.11ac Wi-Fi standard. The new chip is a companion to the 28nm Snapdragon family of processors, and will be built in to the Snapdragon S4 MSM8960 and S4 APQ8064 dual-core and quad-core Krait processors. Qualcomm says the new Wi-Fi chip has "high throughput for fast data transfer and low power consumption." The company will be sampling the chips to manufacturers in Q2 2012.

Google picks Dennis Woodward to run Motorola Mobility, says Bloomberg

According to Bloomberg, Dennis Woodward has been selected by Google to be the new post-acquisition CEO of Motorola Mobility. He is succeeding Sanjay Jha, who has been CEO of Motorola Mobility since it split from Motorola Solutions back in January 2011, and previously served as co-CEO of Motorola from August of 2008 until the time of the split.

Box for Android updated with collaboration features, new users to get 50GB of free storage

Cloud file storage supplier Box has issued a new update to its app for Android smartphones and tablets that offers new collaboration features between multiple users. Additionally, Box is offering new Android users 50GB of free cloud storage if they sign up for the service within the next month.

Video: TouchTec Gloves capacitive touchscreen compatible leather gloves

TouchTec is a company that makes special nano-particle embedded leather that manufacturers can use when making gloves. We tested a pair of TouchTec leather gloves from Nordstrom's and found that they work pretty well while still looking 100 percent "normal".

T-Mobile USA's LTE plan puts HSPA+ on 1900MHz, opens up more possibilities of iPhone use

In a conference call this morning T-Mobile USA provided some more information on their company's $4 billion plans for rolling out a 4G LTE network, including the transformation of much of its 1900MHz GSM network to support HSPA+ 3G/4G voice and data.

T-Mobile loses subscribers to iPhone carriers in Q4 2011

Today T-Mobile USA released its Q4 2010 performance report, which showed a significant loss in subscribers brought on largely, the company claims, by the fact that the three other national carriers all rolled out the Apple iPhone 4S.

T-Mobile announces LTE on AWS during 2013, will move HSPA+ to 1900MHz

As part of its Q4 2011 earnings announcement, T-Mobile USA announced some of its plans for building out a 4G LTE based network in the U.S. The company says that the spectrum and funds received as part of the "breakup fee" it received when its acquisition by AT&T fell apart will help it restructure its network support LTE services.

ZTE says it will launch 8 new phones next week, including multi-core models

Not content to let LG steal all of the multi-core thunder at Mobile World Congress next week, ZTE has revealed that it will announce 8 new smartphones at the show. ZTE has already tipped its hand a bit this week with announcements of the Mimosa X and the PF200 and N910, but it seems that the company has more surprises in store for the actual conference. ZTE says its announcements will feature devices with multi-core chipsets, LTE, and other 4G services, and will include both Android and Windows Phone devices. The company is holding a press conference on Monday, and we will be there to bring you all of the goodies.

Everything Everywhere plans to launch 4G LTE services in the UK by end of year

Everything Everywhere, the UK's largest mobile carrier, has announced plans to launch 4G LTE service in the country by the end of this year. The UK does not currently have any form of LTE service available, and Everything Everywhere's launch is contingent on approval from OFCOM for use of the 1800MHz spectrum for a terrestrial network. The company is expecting to get approval by April or May, and it hopes to have a commercial launch by the end of 2012. It will expand its offerings throughout 2013.

GetJar adds virtual currency to its GetJar Gold app store for Android

GetJar has announced the addition of virtual currency to its GetJar Gold app store for Android devices. The GetJar Gold currency is funded by advertising dollars instead of money from the consumer, and it seems to be a rewards program for those that download a lot of apps from the GetJar Gold store. Users earn GetJar Gold currency by downloading apps, and they can then spend it on premium apps or in-app purchases. GetJar says that users can spend the currency in the GetJar Gold store, the Android Market, or the Amazon Appstore. It remains unclear how this virtual currency would be able to be spent in the Android Market and Amazon's Appstore, though it seems possible that a virtual credit card of some sort could be employed. Developers that collect the virtual currency, however, will be able to convert it into real cold, hard cash.

Samsung moves 20 million Galaxy S II smartphones in 10 months

Samsung has announced that it has now shipped over 20 million Galaxy S II smartphones worldwide since its launch ten months ago. The Galaxy S II hit this milestone even faster than its popular predecessor, the original Galaxy S. Samsung says that shipments of the two smartphones are now over 40 million in total.

ASUS releases Android 4.0 ICS update for original Eee Pad Transformer tablet

ASUS has announced that an Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update for the original Eee Pad Transformer tablet is now being sent out to users. The update will be rolled out gradually over all regions in which the Eee Pad Transformer was sold, starting with Taiwan. Users should get a notification on their tablets when the update is ready to be downloaded and installed.
