Foursquare adds NFC features to Android app

This week, it was revealed that foursquare quietly added Near Field Communications (NFC) check-in and sharing capabilities to its Android app. Smartphones with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and an NFC chip (currently the Google Galaxy Nexus or Nexus S) will now be able to check into locations that have NFC tags by tapping on the tag. They can also share location and venue information with other Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich devices using the platform's Beam function. Foursquare added the NFC check-in feature to the Symbian version of its app late last year.

Apple filed for a preliminary injunction against the Google Galaxy Nexus in the U.S. this week. This time Apple cites four patents that are allegedly infringed upon by Google's flagship smartphone.

AT&T bumps upgrade fee to $36 starting tomorrow

AT&T has revealed that it is raising its upgrade fee for when a customer signs a new two-year commitment and activates a new device on their line. The fee will be raised from $18 to $36. The carrier claims that "the costs associated with upgrading to a new device have increased and is reflected in our new upgrade fee." AT&T also notes that "this fee isn't unique to AT&T and this is the first time we're changing it in nearly 10 years." The raised upgrade fee is due to take effect tomorrow, Sunday, February 12.
