HTC has unveiled its first Beats-branded smartphone for the U.S. market, the Rezound, which will be headed to Verizon Wireless. The Rezound sports a 4.3-inch, 720p display and the obligatory 4G LTE support for Verizon's speedy network.

Video: HTC Vivid and Samsung Skyrocket LTE smartphones for AT&T - first look

Here's a quick first look at the new HTC Vivid and Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket, the first two LTE 4G capable devices for AT&T. Both devices sport 4.5-inch displays and dual-core processors, but the Vivid uses a qHD resolution Super-LCD while the Skyrocket uses a WVGA resolution Super AMOLED Plus display. AT&T is predicting that users should see LTE data speeds in the 5 to 12Mbps range with both devices, which will be available for purchase very soon.

A new study produced by WDS took a look at the cost of repairs and service calls for various smartphones, and the results don't look so hot for Android phones. According to WDS, low-end, cheaper Android handsets cost wireless companies as much as $2 billion in repair and service costs.

LG wants to sell $945 million in stock to keep phone business afloat

LG has announced its intent to option $945 million worth of stock in order to supply funds to its flailing smartphone division. As a result, LG's stock value dropped 14 percent, based on shareholder's concerns that the optioning would dilute their shares' value.

Google Docs updated for Android tablets

Google has released an update to its Docs app for Android smartphones and tablets that offers a number of interface improvements for Android 3 Honeycomb tablet devices. The new Google Docs app features a three-panel interface for browsing documents, support for both landscape and portrait modes, a new sharing system with auto-complete for email addresses, improved video playback, and a details panel that displays a thumbnail and sharing information of a particular document. Google Docs for Android is free and available in the Android Market now.

A new app for the iPhone developed by A9 and powered by Amazon aims to make online shopping and research a breeze thanks to augmented reality technology. Called Flow, the app can recognize books, CD/DVDs, video games, and more by just pointing the iPhone at the object. Flow will then surface a listing of the product on Amazon, complete with pricing and options to buy. Cross-shopping something between a physical store and the internet couldn't be easier.

Majority of U.S. cellphone users under 44 carry smartphones

According to a new report by Nielsen, more than half of cellphone owners under the age of 44 in the U.S. are now carrying smartphones. For those in the 25 - 34 age bracket, smartphone use is at 62 percent.

Yahoo! launches new weather app, widget for Android

Yahoo! has launched a new weather application, with matching widget, for the Android smartphone platform. The application is quite attractive, and offers what Yahoo! is calling crowd sourced images from the Flickr photo site as backgrounds depicting the various states of weather in the different locations users configure in the app. For example, if the user adds Manhattan as a location, they will see photos of weather over the New York skyline. The obvious shortcoming of the app right now is the fact that it offers only one widget size. The Yahoo! Weather app is available for free from the Android Market now.
