Novatel sells its 3 millionth MiFi mobile hotspot

Novatel Wireless has announced that it has shipped 3 million MiFi mobile hotspot devices since the product was introduced back in 2009. Novatel essentially created the mobile hotspot category with its original 3G MiFi, and has spawned a number of copycats and derivatives that play on the mobile hotspot idea. Novatel itself has also come out with 4G WiMAX and LTE hotspots, further expanding its product line. The company says that it is now shipping MiFi hotspots to 25 carriers worldwide.

Google+ for Android gets updated with refreshed user interface

Android users will be happy to know that the Google+ app for their smartphone platform of choice has been updated and now includes a a refreshed user interface as well as a new posting interface, performance and battery life improvements, navigation and notification improvements, and the ability to add people to a circle direct from circle profiles. The update is available now from the Android Market.

Clearwire ends postpaid wireless data plans, offers prepaid unlimited for $50 per month

Clearwire has made some changes to its wireless service plan offerings, and it has ditched all of its postpaid plans in favor of a single prepaid plan in the process. The WiMAX network operator is simplifying its pricing structures, and is altering what devices it will offer to customers as well.

Video: Nokia N9 white MeeGo smartphone hands-on

Despite its classification as a dead product, Nokia went ahead and announced a new version of the venerable N9 today, a white model with 64GB of internal storage. The white version is exactly the same on the inside as the black, cyan, and magenta models, but it eschews the matte finish found on those for a glossier front. Thankfully, Nokia kept the build quality the same, with a single piece of machined polyurethane making up the body of the phone. Nokia says that the white N9 will be available in the same markets as the other colors before the end of this year.

LG's European Optimus smartphones to get Android 2.3 Gingerbread in November

The LG Optimus smartphones in Europe, the Optimus 2X, Optimus 3D, and Optimus Black, will be getting their long-awaiting upgrades to Android 2.3 Gingerbread in November according to LG's official Facebook page. The Optimus 2X will get the upgrade starting tomorrow, November 1, while the Optimus 3D's upgrade starts November 21 and the Optimus Black's begins on November 28. LG specifically refers to unbranded, unlocked models in its announcement, so those who bought their phones from a carrier will likely have to wait even longer for the upgrade.

T-Mobile's LG myTouch smartphones hit shelves November 2 for $79.99

T-Mobile has revealed via its official Facebook page that the new myTouch smartphones built by LG, the myTouch and myTouch Q, will be available for purchase on November 2. Each device will cost $79.99 with a new two-year agreement. The T-Mobile myTouch features a slab design and a 3.8-inch screen, while the myTouch Q makes do with a 3.5-inch display and a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. Both smartphones run Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

Unlocked Apple iPhone 4S now available outside the USA

Apple has made available for purchase unlocked versions of the new iPhone 4S smartphone in 22 new countries in Europe. Pricing starts at about 600 EUR (US$840) for the 16GB model, and varies by region. The countries where the unlocked iPhone 4S is now available include Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, Norway, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland. Apple says it will offer unlocked versions of the smartphone in the U.S. in November.

Nearly half of UK residents own smartphones, half of new sales are Android

According to new research by Kantar Worldpanel ComTech, nearly half of the population in the UK owns a smartphone, and Android smartphones make up half of the devices sold today. Google's mobile operating system has a considerable lead over rivals RIM and Apple, as both companies have less than half of Android's market share in the UK.

AT&T will launch 4G LTE in four new cities on November 6

Along with the announcement of its first 4G LTE smartphones, AT&T has revealed that it will launch 4G LTE service in four new markets on November 6. The new markets to get the high-speed wireless service are Boston, Mass.; Washington, D.C.; Baltimore, Md.; and Athens, Ga. The new markets join Atlanta, Ga.; Chicago, Ill,; and Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, and San Antonio, Texas which got AT&T LTE service earlier this year. AT&T's 4G LTE markets now total 9, and the carrier plans to have 15 live, covering 70 million Americans, by the end of the year.

The Facebook app for Windows Phone smartphones has been updated to version 2.2. The update brings support for the Windows Phone 7.5 "Mango" platform, and the ability to pin specific app features to the home screen. Notifications have also been improved with more events, including friend requests and tagged photos. Facebook for Windows Phone is free and available in the Windows Phone Marketplace now.

HTC's Q3 2011 profits jump 68 percent, handset shipments 93 percent year-over-year
