Android tablet sales estimated at just over 1 million

Google likes to brag about how many Android devices are activated each day (currently 550,000) and how many have been activated over time (135 million). Nobody will disagree that those are huge numbers and that there are tons of Android smartphones anywhere you look. How many Android tablets are out in the wild is a lesser known fact, and something Google has shied away from sharing. Employing some smart math and Google's own numbers, John Gruber of Daring Fireball thinks he has a close estimation of just how many Android tablets have been sold.

Chief Innovation Officer at HTC leaves for personal reasons

The CIO (that's Chief Innovation Officer, not Chief Information Officer) at HTC, Horace Luke, has left the company citing personal reasons. Luke, who was with Microsoft for a number of years before joining HTC in 2006, left HTC as of April 30, 2011. "Horace nurtured a culture of innovation at HTC and instilled a strong consumer design-focus among our employees who continue to raise the bar in designing products that capture our customers' imagination" said HTC in a statement. His responsibilities have been assumed by Scott Croyle, Vice President of Design at HTC.

Kyocera and Sprint have announced the DuraCore, a rugged clamshell phone with CDMA-based push-to-talk (PTT) capabilities. The DuraCore will be one of the first phones to take advantage of Sprint's new CDMA-based Direct Connect PTT service.

Kindle for iOS loses e-book purchases, gains magazine and newspaper subs

Just as we had thought might happen earlier today, Amazon has gone ahead and updated its iOS Kindle app to comply with Apple's in-app purchase rules. Amazon follows Barnes & Noble and Kobo in removing access to in-app e-book purchases.

Apple lets iOS 4.3.5 for iPhone, iPad, iPod touch on the loose

Just over a week after releasing iOS 4.3.4, Apple has gone ahead and made version 4.3.5 available for download. The update, which is for GSM versions of the iPhone, as well as the iPad and iPod touch, apparently fixes another security vulnerability in the system. The update weighs in at nearly 600MB, if you are curious. Those promised delta updates that are said to be coming with iOS 5 can't arrive soon enough.

AT&T announces pricing of LG Thrill 3D smartphone, arrives in "coming weeks"

AT&T has informed us of the pricing for the LG Thrill 4G 3D smartphone that is due to arrive in the coming weeks. The Thrill 4G, which is based on the Optimus 3D, will cost $99.99 with a new two-year contract when it hits shelves. Not too bad for a dual-core, 3D smartphone. An exact release date should be announced in the near future.

Sprint announces first phones with CDMA-based push-to-talk

Sprint has announced the first phones that will make use of its new CDMA-based push-to-talk (PTT) service that will be deployed in the fourth quarter of this year. Sprint's traditional PTT service utilizes its iDEN network, which the carrier plans to shut down in the future.

Samsung could have sold more smartphones than Apple, Nokia in Q2

According to research firm Strategy Analytics, Samsung may have surpassed Apple and Nokia in smartphone sales in Q2 2011 (Q3 for Apple). According to the firm, the success of Samsung's Galaxy S II smartphone could have propelled Samsung to the top slot in smartphone sales.

RIM lays off 2,000 workers, rearranges management positions

RIM has announced that its "cost optimization program" is in full effect and that it has downsized its worldwide workforce by 2,000. In addition, the darling of Waterloo is playing musical chairs with a number of its high-level managers, though co-CEOs Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie are staying put.
