Verizon had expected new iPhone this summer

In Verizon Wireless' second quarter financial results, it was revealed that the carrier activated only 2.3 million iPhones, much less than rival AT&T, and a lower number than many had expected. Apparently Verizon was caught off guard this summer, as it, like everybody else, had expected Apple to release a new version of the iPhone, as Apple had done every year since 2007.

T-Mobile teams up with Los Angeles Angels for tablet rental program

Apparently Los Angeles Angels baseball games are just not that exciting in person, as T-Mobile has paired up with the team to offer Android tablets for rental to keep fans entertained while at the game. The program offers a choice of two tablets to use while at the stadium, and T-Mobile has included some apps that it feels would appeal to baseball fans.

AT&T facing opposition to T-Mobile buyout from its own customers

It looks like AT&T has found another opponent of its proposed buyout of T-Mobile: its own customers. 11 of them, at least. A law firm in New York has filed an arbitration case against AT&T to block the merger on behalf of 11 current AT&T customers.

Sprint pushing Nexus S 4G update on July 25 to improve WiMAX performance

Sprint has announced that the update for the Google Nexus S 4G smartphone that was expected to arrive on July 11 will now be made available to users on July 25. The update, which bumps the version of Android installed up to 2.3.5 Gingerbread, offers faster WiMAX speeds and a number of other improvements.

Apple forked over $2.6 billion of $4.5 billion sum for Nortel patents

According to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Apple paid more than half of the purchase price that bought Nortel's suite of smartphone and communications patents earlier this month. Apple was partnered with a number of other companies in the purchase, including Microsoft, RIM, Sony, and Ericsson.

LG Optimus 3D smartphone now available from Three UK

LG's entry into the 3D smartphone world, the Optimus 3D, can now be had from Three UK, as the carrier has announced that it is taking orders for the phone now. You can get the Optimus 3D with a two-year contract on a 35 GBP per month plan, or for 40 GBP if you sign up for Three's unlimited The One Plan plan. There is also the option to purchase the Optimus 3D without a contract for 449.99 GBP (US$733).

Verizon activated 2.3 million iPhones in Q2, still behind AT&T

Verizon Wireless has revealed that it activated 2.3 million iPhone smartphones in Q2 2011, the first full quarter that it has carried the iPhone. This is a bit less than the 3.6 million that AT&T activated in the same timeframe, and a modest increase over the 2.2 million that were activated for Verizon in Q1. Verizon also claims to have activated 1.2 million 4G LTE smartphones and data devices.

San Francisco brings cellphone radiation law back from the dead

The city of San Francisco has approved a bill that will require cellphone retailers to display the Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) rating on a tag next to each phone that they sell. The SAR rating is an FCC-mandated specification of cellphone radiation that all phone manufacturers must test for and reveal before they sell their phones in the U.S.

Verizon Communications CEO Seidenberg steps down, succeeded by COO McAdam

During its Q2 2011 financial reports, Verizon Communications has announced that CEO Ivan Seidenberg will be resigning his position come the end of this month. He will remain chairman while President and COO Lowell McAdam assumes the role of CEO. This transition has been underway since 2010. McAdam was previously the CEO of the Verizon Wireless arm of the company until he assumed his current duties at Verizon Communications in September 2010.

Verizon adds 2.2 million subs in Q2 2011, now totals 106.3 million

Verizon Wireless just let loose its financial results for Q2 2011, and it revealed that Big Red has continued to grow and add to its base of customers. The number one carrier (for now) in the U.S. managed to increase its subscriber base by 6.6 percent in Q2, and revenues were up 10.2 percent.
