HP buying Palm for $1.2 billion

Apple acquires Siri, developer of the Sari iPhone personal assistant application

Today Apple purchased a mobile startup based in Jan Jose, California called Siri. The firm created an iPhone application by the same name that serves as a voice-activated personal assistant for the iPhone. For example, you can speak in common English: "Find a romantic sushi restaurant near home," and the software will help find recommendations. The price Apple paid wasn't revealed, but a managing director with Menlo Ventures and a board member with Siri told The Wall Street Journal that "The offer from Apple was of a scope and tenor that it was a no-brainer to accept it."

HTC Desire Android smartphone could land on U.S. Cellular this summer

U.S. Cellular today wrote on its Facebook Fan page that the HTC Desire could launch as soon as July, provided that it passes the carrier's testing. The full post read: "Hungry for more Android info? How about a peek at some specs for the gorgeous HTC Desire including a 3.7" AMOLED touchscreen display, 5 MP camera with LED flash, Wi-Fi, GPS, Android Market and an 8 GB microSD card. How about news of a launch date around July? We'll need to make sure our rigorous testing is complete before you can get your hands on this sweet phone. LG Mobile revenue and profits down in Q1 2010

Today LG reported its first quarter 2010 earnings. While the company as a whole saw an increase in sales and operating profits, LG Mobile Communications Company, its mobile subsidiary, reported lower revenue and profit.

Here's a look at the new BlackBerry email and SMS integration BMW is adding to its cars. The system works via Bluetooth and is demonstrated on a new Pearl 3G 9100. I apologize for the video quality, as this was shot on a phone at RIM's WES 2010 event.

Vodafone announces low cost Vodafone 845 Android 2.1 powered smartphone

Today Vodafone announced that it will sell the Vodafone 845, an Android 2.1 powered handset that the carrier says will be "low cost," despite its fairly robust feature set.

Microsoft has "concerns" with Android, looking to license its patents to Android manufacturers

Apple iPad 3G devices ready for shipment

Apple said earlier this month that its iPad 3G devices would be in stores by 5pm on April 30th. Today MacDailyNews is reporting that the devices are ready to ship out to Apple stores and iPad customers. International shipments are still scheduled for the end of May.

Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) set for June 7

Today Apple announced that its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) would occur on June 7th in San Francisco at the Moscone West conference center. The five day conference includes development sessions for the iPad, as well as iPhone OS 4, and Mac OS X labs. "This year's WWDC offers developers in-depth sessions and hands-on working labs to learn more about iPhone OS 4, the world's most advanced mobile operating system," Apple's senior vice president of iPhone software, Scott Forstall, said. WWDC has been the place of past iPhone product launches, and so we could see a new iPhone announced this year as well. More information can be found at developer.apple.com/wwdc.

Firefox for Android 2.0+ available now in pre-alpha stage

A pre-alpha release of Firefox for Android, codenamed Fennec, is available as a free-install outside of the Android market for those with Android 2.0 or newer smartphones. Vladimir Vukićević, a Mozilla developer, said on his blog that it's only been tested on the Motorola DROID and the Nexus One, and that there are still some bugs that could force a reboot. He said it's usable enough that Mozilla wants feedback, however. To install the browser, point your phone to bit.ly/fennec-android.

Google outs Place Pages for mobile

Google has announced that its Place Pages software, which organizes information about specific places on Google Maps, is now optimized for mobile viewing on your phone. Place Pages can provide information such as location, customer ratings, hours, and reviews, on a given destination, such as a restaurant. The software works on Android powered phones as well as the iPhone and iPod touch.

Sprint Nextel reports increased wireless revenues despite losing customers in Q1 2010 earnings

Today Sprint Nextel reported its first quarter 2010 earnings. The wireless carrier didn't lose as many customers as it did during the prior quarter, and it reported increased wireless revenues.
