RIM claims 1 million PlayBook users, could license BlackBerry 10 to other manufacturers Posted: 29 Mar 2012 04:19 PM PDT During RIM's investor conference call following its dismal Q4 2012 financial report, CEO Thorsten Heins claimed that the company now has over 1 million BlackBerry PlayBook customers. Additionally, Heins said that RIM wants to refocus its efforts on the enterprise market, and could possibly license its BlackBerry 10 platform to other manufacturers in the future. Google to sell tablets direct to consumers this year claims WSJ Posted: 29 Mar 2012 03:28 PM PDT The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Google will revive its direct-to-consumer sales strategy it used with the Nexus One smartphone to sell tablets later this year. Dell denies leaving U.S. smartphone market, says new phones on the way Posted: 29 Mar 2012 01:15 PM PDT Earlier today it was reported that with the cancellation of the Venue and Venue Pro smartphones, Dell was exiting the U.S. smartphone market to focus on emerging markets. Best Buy expected to open 300 new mobile stores over next few years Posted: 29 Mar 2012 09:50 AM PDT Electronics giant Best Buy announced its quarterly earnings today, in which it reported a $1.7 billion loss for the quarter and related store closings and job cuts. On a more positive note, Best Buy also stated it would open 100 new Best Buy Mobile stores in fiscal 2013 to focus on selling mobile devices and service. Samsung improves Android's Face Unlock feature with blink detection Posted: 29 Mar 2012 08:54 AM PDT Face Unlock was one of the attention grabbing features of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich when it was announced last year. It's a neat concept, but even Google admits that it can be easily fooled with a photograph of the user. Apple iPhone 4 customers can now register for $15 antennagate settlement Posted: 29 Mar 2012 07:33 AM PDT Apple iPhone 4 customers that are still having issues with reception, commonly referred to as the "antennagate" debacle, can now register for the settlement won by the class action lawsuit filed against the company. Those that have not already accepted a free bumper case from Apple are entitled to get $15 in cash compensation, or about half of the retail value of the bumper case. Eligible parties should receive an email concerning the settlement by the end of April, though they can register for their compensation now by calling 1-877-417-7234 or visiting www.iPhone4Settlement.com. HTC dishes Android 4.0 ICS upgrades to Sensation, Sensation XE in Europe Posted: 29 Mar 2012 07:09 AM PDT According to The Unwired, HTC has released the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich upgrades for the Sensation and Sensation XE smartphones in Europe. The update offers Android 4.0.3 and version 3.6 of HTC's Sense interface. HTC is delivering the update to unlocked and unbranded smartphones first, and it will be up to individual carriers to deliver it to their customers later. Smartphone shipments to top 1 billion by 2016, claims IDC Posted: 29 Mar 2012 06:42 AM PDT Research firm IDC has predicted that smartphone shipments will grow from the 494 million in 2011 to 1.16 billion in 2016, more than doubling. Smartphones are the fastest growing segment of what IDC calls "smart connected devices," which also includes PCs and media tablets or devices with 6-inch or larger displays. HTC One X, One S, One V smartphones hit Europe next week Posted: 29 Mar 2012 05:43 AM PDT HTC has revealed that its One series of Android smartphones, which includes the One X, One S, and One V, will be available for purchase in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland starting next week. The One series were announced at Mobile World Congress this year, and all feature Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and HTC's new Sense 4.0 user interface. The One X is expected to sell unsubsidized for 599 EUR (US$798), the One S for 499 EUR (US$665), and the One V for 299 EUR (US$398). All are due to hit store shelves on April 2.
