The company offered no additional details beyond the following quote: "We're currently experiencing a national data & text messaging outage. Our engineers are working to resolve it. Nokia updates transportation apps for Lumia smartphones

Nokia has released updated versions of its Drive, Maps, and Transport apps for Lumia smartphones in the Windows Phone Marketplace. Nokia says the new Drive app offers offline capabilities for navigation when there is no cellular coverage, while Maps gains the ability to save a list of favorite places as well as display traffic information. Nokia Transport offers routing and guidance for public transit in 510 cities in 46 countries around the world, with scheduling information being available for 86 cities. All three apps are free for Lumia 800 and Lumia 710 owners and are available now.

Tivo for iPhone, iPad updated; Android Tablet app coming soon

Tivo has announced an update of its iPhone and iPad app that is available now in the iTunes App Store. Browsing improvements have been made, and users now have the ability to create a WishList search directly when in the app. More features have been added so you can easily manage you DVR while you are on the road, images will now be high-res/retina quality, as well. And not wanting to leave Android users out in the cold, Tivo expects to offer its Android Tablet app this Spring.

Nokia releases panoramic camera app for Lumia smartphones

Nokia has released Creative Studio, a new app for the Lumia 800 and Lumia 710 Windows Phone smartphones that will let users capture panoramic images and share them with others. Users can snap four consecutive images with the app that will then be automatically stitched together to form one panoramic scene. The final image can then be shared with Twitter, Facebook, or Flickr. Creative Studio is free and available in the Windows Phone Marketplace on Lumia smartphones now.

Twitter rolls out promoted tweets in mobile users' timelines

Following up on its announcement from late last month that it would be inserting promoted tweets into mobile users' timelines, Twitter has expanded the program to include tweets from companies that are not specifically followed by the user. Brands now have the ability to target Twitter users based on their interests or the device they are using. The new promoted tweets will only be displayed within the official Twitter apps for iOS and Android, so if you don't want to see the promoted tweets (read: ads), you can use a third-party app. The side-benefit of using a third-party app is that you will have a much better Twitter experience as a result.

GSMA, WBA collaborate to make accessing Wi-Fi hotspots easier

The GSMA and the Wireless Broadband Association have announced a new partnership that will make it easier for smartphone and tablet users to connect to Wi-Fi hotspots. Similar to the Wi-Fi CERTIFIED Hotspot program announced last year, the initiative will use SIM card-based authentication to allow users to automatically connect to Wi-Fi hotspots.

A new study from game company Miniclip and ad supplier MoPub suggests that while mobile games are increasingly popular, people aren't likely to be very mobile while playing them. The survey shows that a significant amount of time spent playing games on mobile devices is done while at home, not on the go.

Apple says new iPad is within specifications amid complaints of overheating

Apple has officially responded to the various reports of overheating in the new iPad with a statement that says the new device is working as it should. Users have reported overheating in the lower right corner, and a test shows that the new iPad runs a full 10 degrees Fahrenheit warmer than the iPad 2.

Verizon drops price of Family Locator service to $9.99

Verizon Wireless has announced that the price of its Family Locator service has been dropped to a flat $9.99 per month fee. Prior to this, Family Locator was billed with a base fee and individual charges for each handset that it was used with. The service allows subscribers to see the physical location of the phones that are on their account, and is advertised as a safety tool for parents.

HTC teams with LogMeIn for remote smartphone support

HTC has announced a new partnership with LogMeIn to provide remote support for future smartphones. Upcoming HTC Android devices will come with LogMeIn Rescue pre-installed (if approved by carriers), which will give HTC support staff the ability to remotely configure, diagnose, and troubleshoot technical problems with the phone. The new service will be added to HTC's existing technical support program, which is available to customers for free.
