Video: Panasonic ELUGA waterproof smartphone hands-on

Panasonic was displaying its new ELUGA line of waterproof smartphones for the European and North American markets at Mobile World Congress this year. The smaller ELUGA boasts a 4.3-inch, qHD (540 x 960 pixel) OLED display, a dual-core 1GHz processor, Android 2.3 Gingerbread with Panasonic's custom user interface. It is extremely thin and also packs support for NFC payment systems. Panasonic says the ELUGA is IP57 rated for water and dust-proofing, and it expects to launch it in Europe in April of this year, with a North American launch slated for June or July.

Google puts apps, books, movies, music on sale to celebrate Play launch

To celebrate the launch of its new Google Play store and cloud syncing service, Google is offering various books, music, and movies on sale. A new book, app, movie, and music album will be on sale each day for seven days. Books, apps, and albums that are on sale will cost 25 cents, while movies can be rented for the same cost. Verizon releases list of Android 4.0 ICS updates for its smartphones, tablets

Verizon Wireless has released a list of its current Android 2.x smartphones and Android 3.x tablets that it expects to receive updates to the new Android 4.0 operating system, which was released in December of 2011. The list includes devices from Motorola, Samsung, LG, and HTC.

Google Books, Music for Android updated with Play branding, no new features

Google just announced its new cloud-based integrated entertainment service called Play, and it has already updated two of the companion apps for Android devices to reflect the new branding. Google Play Books and Google Play Music replace the Google Books and Google Music apps that were previously available. Aside from the name change and newly-styled app icons, the apps are pretty much the same as before. Google plans to update the Android Market to the Play Store in the next couple of days, and we expect that the Google Videos app for Android will get a similar treatment.

Sprint, T-Mobile requesting halt on FCC approval of Verizon spectrum purchase

Sprint and T-Mobile, along with the Rural Telecommunications Group and Direct TV, have petitioned the Federal Communications Commission to pause its investigation into Verizon Wireless' proposed spectrum purchases from cable companies. The other carriers say that Verizon redacted far too much information in the documents provided to the FCC, and that the hidden information may cause concern for anti-competitive behavior.

Verizon expands 4G LTE footprint to new markets

Verizon Wireless has announced further expansion of its 4G LTE network. Customers in Columbus, Miss. and Altus, Okla. can now access the high-speed LTE network, and those in Waltham, Mass. and Farmington, Conn. now have greater coverage. Verizon's 4G LTE network spans more than 200 million people in 196 markets across the country.

Court orders Google, Motorola to hand over Android data to Apple

A U.S. judge has ordered Google and Motorola to hand over data related to the Android operating system to Apple as part of the litigation over the patent lawsuits between the companies. Google ups Android Market app size limit to 4GB

Google has announced that the size limit on Android apps in the Android Market has been raised to 4GB from the 50MB it was previously. The actual app installer package will still need to be 50MB or under, but now developers can include up to two 2GB "helper" files with it that can be downloaded direct from the Market itself. This alleviates the pain of having to download a large file the first time a user opens a complex game or other high-end app, and streamlines the process for all involved. Users will be able to see how large an app and all of its accompanying downloads are before they install it, and it is recommended that they download large apps when a Wi-Fi connection is available to save cellular bandwidth.
