Android, iOS devices gain access to Google recent search histories

Google has announced a new feature for Android and iOS smartphones that lets users access their recent search histories on their mobile devices. The new "Recent" button will show searches that have been performed on other devices and computers as long as the user was logged into their Google account and had web history enabled. The Recent feature will show searches performed in the last day or so, according to Google.

Isis mobile payment system gains support of point of sale terminal makers

Isis, the upcoming mobile payments initiative from Verizon Wireless, T-Mobile USA, and AT&T, has gained the support of numerous point of sale terminal makers, including VeriFone, Ingenico, ViVOtech, and Equinox Payments. The companies will integrate Isis-compatible NFC systems into their registers and terminals. These partnerships will allow Isis users to pay for goods and services with their mobile phones at retail locations across the country. Isis is set to launch by the middle of this year.

Google adds HD playback to YouTube on Android 2.2, 2.3 smartphones

This weekend Google updated the YouTube app for Android smartphones running Android 2.2 Froyo and 2.3 Gingerbread to support HD video playback. Prior to this, the app would max out its stream at 480p resolution. Now it is capable of playing 720p video, provided you have a device with a 720p or higher resolution display. The update is free and available in the Android Market now.

AT&T wants users with old 2G phones to upgrade to 3G/4G

According to a report from MarketWatch and confirmed to us by AT&T, AT&T has been encouraging customers that are still using 2G EDGE-only devices to upgrade to more modern 3G or 4G devices. The carrier notes that it wants to re-purpose the spectrum used by 2G services for newer, faster networks.

Nokia sends Ovi Share image sharing service out to pasture

In its continuing effort to consolidate services and eliminate the Ovi brand, Nokia has announced that it will be turning off the Ovi Share image sharing service come May 30, 2012. Ovi Share allowed users to upload photos and plot them on a map with the geo-tagged information stored in the files. Nokia is allowing users to download all of their images as one zip file or as separate pieces starting now and continuing until the service is shut off. Users will not be able to upload any new images after March 13.

U.S. police can now search suspects' cell phones without a warrant

Last week, a federal appeals court in Indiana ruled that police officers have the right to search a suspect's cellphone without having to obtain a warrant to do so. The court said that the possible invasion of privacy from doing so was slight enough that it would not violate Fourth Amendment rights against unreasonable search and seizure. The presiding judge determined that since police officers can search a diary for information such as addresses and phone numbers, they also have the right to search cellphones for pertinent information.

U.S. Senator wants FTC investigation into iOS, Android over privacy concerns

Consumer privacy watchdog Charles Schumer, a U.S. Senator from New York, has petitioned the Federal Trade Commission to investigate Apple's iOS platform and Google's Android platform over various privacy concerns - most notably, the apparent access to a user's private photos that apps on both platforms have.
