Google Books for iOS updated with Play branding, integration Posted: 12 Mar 2012 06:36 PM PDT Just like it did with its apps for the Android platform, Google has released an updated version of Google Books for iOS that features Google Play branding and integration. Now called Google Play Books, the app has gained a new icon and improved stability, though Google isn't saying what else has changed. Alcatel Venture prepaid QWERTY Android smartphone up for pre-order from Virgin Mobile Posted: 12 Mar 2012 05:12 PM PDT Cannot live without a full QWERTY keyboard on your smartphone? Take a look at the new Alcatel Venture from Virgin Mobile. The Android 2.3 Gingerbread-powered handset will run you just $99 out of pocket, yet offers a 2.8-inch touchscreen display; a 2-megapixel camera for video and pictures; 3G and Wi-Fi connectivity; and a microSD card slot for additional data storage. Preorders are now being accepted for the device, which will be available on March 15. Update: It has been brought to our attention that the Venture is not made by ZTE as originally reported, but is actually made by Alcatel One Touch and distributed by PCD. Twitter acquires micro-blogging platform Posterous Posted: 12 Mar 2012 02:21 PM PDT Twitter has announced that it has purchased Posterous, a micro-blogging platform, for an undisclosed sum. The existing Posterous employees will now become Twitter employees, though Twitter says that it will keep the Posterous website and user content online without disruption. Microsoft updates Photosynth app with iOS 5 support, Twitter sharing Posted: 12 Mar 2012 02:06 PM PDT Microsoft has updated its popular panoramic picture taking app for the iPhone, Photosynth, with greater compatibility with iOS 5 and new social sharing features. Photosynth lets users capture a 360 degree panoramic image using their iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch's camera, which it then stitches together into one flat plane. The image can then be saved to the device or uploaded to the web and shared to Twitter, Facebook, or Bing Maps. Photosynth is free and available in the iTunes App Store now. Google+ mobile site updated with more speed, more locales supported Posted: 12 Mar 2012 12:55 PM PDT Google has updated the Google+ mobile website for iOS, Android, and BlackBerry 7 devices once again. This time the refresh offers a slightly cleaner interface and improved speed when navigating the page. It also supports 60 locales now, including Bengali, Icelandic, and Swahili. Using the web page, as opposed to a native app, means that you give up the automatic photo uploads and video hangout calls, but this might be a good solution for tablet users until Google releases a proper tablet version of the Google+ app. The new Google+ website can be accessed by going to plus.google.com in a supported device's browser. Samsung Galaxy S Blaze 4G arrives for T-Mobile later this month Posted: 12 Mar 2012 10:53 AM PDT T-Mobile has announced that the Samsung Galaxy S Blaze 4G smartphone will be available for purchase later this month. The Galaxy S Blaze 4G features a 3.97-inch, Super AMOLED display and is powered by a dual-core, 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. It also features support for T-Mobile's "4G" HSPA+ 42Mbps network. It will be available for purchase in select stores on March 21, with a full rollout planned for March 28. The study organizers "lost" 50 specially-prepared smartphones that had been seeded with personal and corporate type data and placed them in high-traffic public places in 5 major cities, logging what happened once they were "found." Apple, Microsoft-led consortium cleared by U.S. DoJ to purchase Nortel patents Posted: 12 Mar 2012 07:21 AM PDT Rockstar Consortium, the group of companies that includes Apple, Microsoft, RIM, Ericsson, and Sony, has announced that the waiting period for review by the U.S. Department of Justice on its proposed purchase of the majority of Nortel's patent portfolio has expired and it is free and clear to complete the acquisition. The five companies bid $4.5 billion last year to obtain the roughly 4,000 patents related to networking and communications technologies that Nortel had. Last month, the DoJ announced that it closed its investigation into the proposed purchase and that it found the patent purchase "unlikely to substantially lessen competition." Earlier reports had shown that Apple financed $2.6 billion of the $4.5 billion purchase price, making it by far the largest bidder in the consortium. The group beat out Google in the bidding war for the patents last summer. Read the full story here. |
Google Maps for Android updated with simpler interface Posted: 12 Mar 2012 05:32 AM PDT This past weekend, Google updated its Maps for Android app with a simpler user interface and easier to use navigation. The new version offers a simplified menu in the Navigation portion of the app and is a closer match to the user interface found in the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system. AT&T stretches 4G LTE footprint to 12 new markets starting in April Posted: 12 Mar 2012 05:09 AM PDT AT&T has announced the next round of expansion for its 4G LTE network. The carrier plans to bring the high-speed wireless data service to Akron, Canton, and Cleveland, Ohio; Naples, Fla.; Bloomington, Lafayette, and Muncie, Ind.; Baton Rouge and New Orleans, La.; St. Louis, Mo; Bryan-College Station, Texas; and Staten Island in New York City starting in April and continuing through May and into early summer. AT&T says that its 4G LTE network offers 10 times the speed of the average 3G network in use today. Read the full story here. |
