4G LTE HTC ThunderBolt for Verizon expected to hit store shelves February 24 Posted: 11 Feb 2011 04:48 AM PST BGR is reporting that the HTC ThunderBolt smartphone for Verizon, capable of running on its 4G LTE network, is now expected hit store shelves on February 24. The ThunderBolt originally was leaked to arrive on Valentine's Day (February 14) but that date has been disputed. The ThunderBolt is a Google Android 2.2 Froyo powered smartphone that offers a large 4.3-inch touchscreen display, an 8 megapixel rear facing camera with HD video recording, a 1.3 megapixel forward facing camera, Wi-Fi, and 8GB of internal storage. With Verizon entering the iPhone fray, AT&T ends its long run of exclusivity with Apple's iPhone. Verizon is offering a 16GB model for $199.99 and a 32GB model for $299.99. New customers will be able to purchase the device today from Verizon Wireless, Apple or in Best Buy stores. Clearwire ditching retail business focus Posted: 10 Feb 2011 08:15 AM PST Clearwire is abandoning its 4G WiMAX retail business efforts to instead focus on its wholesale business, The Wall Street Journal is reporting. Despite changing its focus, Clearwire does not currently have plans to shut down any of its 140 retail stores, which it uses to sell its 4G products, including wireless hotspots and 4G USB modems. "The strategic shift could lay the groundwork for an infusion of cash from Sprint into Clearwire down the line, although there are currently no plans for one," The Wall Street Journal said. Verizon places first voice-over-LTE call using LG Revolution 4G Posted: 10 Feb 2011 05:20 AM PST Verizon Wireless has announced that it has successfully placed its first voice-over-LTE (VoLTE) call on its commercial network. The call was made and received on the LG Revolution 4G smartphone. The call was originated in Basking Ridge, NJ and was placed to another technologist in the same town. The Galaxy S 4G, the successor to the Samsung Vibrant, is the latest Galaxy S-class smartphone to be offered by the carrier. This Android powered handset will offer a 4-inch Super AMOLED display, run Android 2.2 Froyo, and is capable of achieving peak HSPA+ downloads speeds of 21Mbps.
