4G LTE HTC ThunderBolt for Verizon expected to hit store shelves February 24

BGR is reporting that the HTC ThunderBolt smartphone for Verizon, capable of running on its 4G LTE network, is now expected hit store shelves on February 24. The ThunderBolt originally was leaked to arrive on Valentine's Day (February 14) but that date has been disputed. The ThunderBolt is a Google Android 2.2 Froyo powered smartphone that offers a large 4.3-inch touchscreen display, an 8 megapixel rear facing camera with HD video recording, a 1.3 megapixel forward facing camera, Wi-Fi, and 8GB of internal storage. Verizon opens up pre-orders for HP Pre 2 webOS phone

Verizon is now allowing customers to pre-order its Pre 2 smartphone, which offers HP's latest webOS 2.0 operating system and a 3.1-inch glass touchscreen display with a slide-out keyboard. The Pre 2 also sports a speedy 1GHz processor under the hood, has = a 5 megapixel camera with an LED flash and video recording, 802.11b/g Wi-Fi connectivity, and a plethora of social networking features. HTC Desire HD smartphone now being offered by Telus

Canadian Telus customers are now able to pick up the HTC Desire HD smartphone. The Desire HD offers a large 4.3-inch touchscreen display and a speedy 1GHz processor for web browsing and perusing Google's Android Market. Sprint Q4 2010 report shows subscriber growth, record low churn rate

Today Sprint reported its Q4 2010 earnings. The carrier added a total of 1.1 million new subscribers and now serves a total of 49.9 million customers. Its revenues were up 6 percent over Q4 2009, and its churn was the lowest ever for a fourth quarter.

Verizon iPhone 4 now available for all

Verizon Wireless this morning opened its doors to the general public to offer Apple's iPhone 4. With Verizon entering the iPhone fray, AT&T ends its long run of exclusivity with Apple's iPhone. Verizon is offering a 16GB model for $199.99 and a 32GB model for $299.99. New customers will be able to purchase the device today from Verizon Wireless, Apple or in Best Buy stores. According to CNN, there aren't many crowds up there lining up for the device, so it looks like you won't have to worry about long lines.

Clearwire ditching retail business focus

Clearwire is abandoning its 4G WiMAX retail business efforts to instead focus on its wholesale business, The Wall Street Journal is reporting. Despite changing its focus, Clearwire does not currently have plans to shut down any of its 140 retail stores, which it uses to sell its 4G products, including wireless hotspots and 4G USB modems. "The strategic shift could lay the groundwork for an infusion of cash from Sprint into Clearwire down the line, although there are currently no plans for one," The Wall Street Journal said. Clearwire has been seeking funding to help it continue building out its 4G WiMAX network.

Samsung announced the Tocco Icon (S5260 Star II) last month as the successor to the Samsung S5230 Star or Tocco Lite, which is now coming to the UK through Orange. This mid-ranged device features a 3.0-inch WQVGA display, Wi-Fi, a 3.15MP camera, Facebook and Twitter integration, Bluetooth, a microSD card slot, and Samsung's standard TouchWiz UI.

Verizon places first voice-over-LTE call using LG Revolution 4G

Verizon Wireless has announced that it has successfully placed its first voice-over-LTE (VoLTE) call on its commercial network. The call was made and received on the LG Revolution 4G smartphone. The call was originated in Basking Ridge, NJ and was placed to another technologist in the same town. The test calls lasted more than 10 minutes and testers were able to chat and download apps from the Android Market while the call was being placed.

Orange UK and T-Mobile UK's joint venture, Everything Everywhere, is trialing new branded stores in the UK. It will open five stores in the UK over the next month. This means that the areas with both Orange and T-Mobile retail outlets will merge into one. Everything Everywhere said that it plans on increasing its 720 retail outlets and confirmed that there would be no job cuts.

UK iPad users can now grab the BBC's iPlayer app from Apple UK's App Store. The BBC announced via its blog earlier this week that it will offer its iPlayer app for both the Apple iPad tablet and Android smartphones by the end of the week. The BBC says that the application will be browse-only over 3G connections, and will require a Wi-Fi connection for accessing streaming content.

T-Mobile has added the recently announced Samsung Galaxy S 4G to its online web store as a "coming soon" model. The Galaxy S 4G, the successor to the Samsung Vibrant, is the latest Galaxy S-class smartphone to be offered by the carrier. This Android powered handset will offer a 4-inch Super AMOLED display, run Android 2.2 Froyo, and is capable of achieving peak HSPA+ downloads speeds of 21Mbps. Pricing and availability are yet to be announced, but we expect to go hands on with the device next Monday at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain.
