HTC Freestyle feature phone on sale February 13 for $99.99 from AT&T

AT&T has announced that it will begin offering the new HTC Freestyle messaging phone February 13 for $99.99 with a qualifying plan. The Freestyle is based on the Qualcomm BREW Mobile Platform and features HTC's Sense user experience - in spite of the fact that it is not a smartphone. Roman Catholic confession app hits iPhone

Feeling guilty about switching from AT&T for the Verizon iPhone and don't have time to make it to a confessional? A company called "Little i Apps" has developed a new app with the help of a reverend called "Confession: A Roman Catholic App." It provides a "custom examination of conscience based upon age, sex, and vocation," allowing you to add your sins and then choose from 7 different acts of contrition. The app is available for the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad, and is available for $1.99. Now go on, confess those sins.

BBC iPlayer app for Apple iPad, Android coming this week

The BBC has announced on its blog that it will offer its iPlayer app for both the Apple iPad tablet and Android smartphones by the end of the week. The BBC says that the application will be browse only over 3G connections, and will require a Wi-Fi connection for streaming content. While the BBC blog did not mention a specific launch day, BBC engineer Geoff Marshall tweeted that the apps were set to drop on Thursday.

HTC partners with on-demand gaming company, OnLive

HTC today announced a new partnership with OnLive, an on-demand mobile gaming company. HTC has made an initial investment of $40 million into the company. HTC CEO Peter Chou stated "In a world of mobile Internet ubiquity, content is king but it's not all created equal. OnLive provides a connected cloud-based gaming experience unlike any other." "HTC and OnLive share a similar goal for expanding connected cloud-based gaming by making it wireless and location-independent."

Samsung Galaxy S 4G smartphone to be offered under $150

According to some leaked images, Walmart will soon offer Samsung's Galaxy S 4G smartphone for T-Mobile. The Galaxy S 4G is the successor to the Samsung Vibrant and offers users 4G connectivity, a 5 megapixel camera with 720 HD video recording, and a large 4-inch Super AMOLED display. If the photos are correct, the smartphone is set to be offered at just under $150, with a two-year service agreement.

Google introduces Translate app for Apple iPhone

Today Google officially launched its Google Translate for iPhone app. The new application is available now from Apple's App Store and offers all the same features of the online web app plus some improvements that include speak to translate, listen to translations, full-screen mode, as well as the ability to view dictionary results and access translation history off-line. The free app is available now for iPhone and iPod touch devices running iOS version 3 or later.

Verizon to offer Voice over LTE on LG Revolution 4G smartphone - updated

It is being reported by CNN that Verizon will announce that its new LG Revolution Android smartphone will support voice and video calling over its 4G LTE network, and that the service will be called VoLTE. Update: Verizon has said that CNN is incorrect and that merely a demo of VoLTE will be shown on the LG Revolution at Mobile World Congress.

Last.fm dropping free mobile streaming music for all but Windows Phone 7

Last.fm has announced that, starting on February 15, it will drop free streaming for mobile devices on all platforms except Windows Phone 7. All other platforms will have access to subscription-based, ad-free streaming music services through its mobile app. Windows Phone 7's Last.fm support will remain free and ad-based. Last.fm will also remain free on its website in the U.S., UK, and Germany and will still offer its free services through its desktop application. The company says that its ad supported model does not work for most markets, so it is moving to a high-quality, low-cost, ad-free subscription model instead.

Waze for iPhone updated with user-generated voice alerts

Waze has released a new version of its iPhone app that allows users to leave voice alerts for other drivers. One driver, for example, could warn another of an upcoming road hazard or poor weather conditions by leaving a voice recording. Anyone driving towards that area can listen to the voice description of the current conditions to avoid any upcoming issues. The application is available in the iTunes App Store now.

Verizon iPhone 4 teardown hints at global capabilities with CDMA/GSM support

The folks over at ifixit.com have posted some notes after doing a complete teardown of the new Apple iPhone 4 for Verizon Wireless. The team found that the iPhone has a Qualcomm MDM6600 chip, which provides GSM and CDMA connectivity support, similar to the DROID Pro smartphone. Nokia expects E7 to drive sales in 2011

A Nokia senior official, Ukko Lappalainen, recently said that Nokia is hoping that its Symbian^3 powered E7 will help drive Nokia's sales in 2011. "The E7 is by far the most important model for us this year when looking at sales expectations," he told Reuters. The E7 began shipping globally yesterday.

$10 million in fake Apple iPhones, iPods found in L.A. raid

In a Los Angeles raid, police officers seized an estimated $10 million dollars in fake Apple iPhones and iPods. According to reports, the counterfeits looked just like the real thing with buyers unknowingly purchased bogus devices. "This was a well-funded operation, and the counterfeits looked very authentic,"Ron Boyd, chief of the L.A. Port Police said, noting that most people probably wouldn't have realized the devices were fake until they got them home and tried to activate them through iTunes. The devices were shipped to L.A. from Asia.

T-Mobile is kicking off its Valentine's Day sale this Friday and Saturday by offering all of its phones for free in T-Mobile retail stores. That includes popular devices such as the myTouch 4G, the HTC HD2, the Samsung Vibrant, and the T-Mobile G2. Each phone purchase will require a new two-year T-Mobile contract.

HTC ThunderBolt pre-orders begin at Best Buy

The HTC ThunderBolt is now available for pre-order in BesT Buy and Best Buy Mobile standalone stores. While Best Buy didn't say how much it will cost to pre-order the phone, Engadget says it will cost $50.
