Firefox Home headed to BlackBerry, Symbian smartphones Posted: 29 Sep 2010 04:39 AM PDT Yesterday Mozilla posted an update on its blog with an outlook for the future. The firm said that it plans to release versions of its Firefox Home application for both the BlackBerry and Symbian smartphones. Firefox Home allows users to access their Firefox browser data, such as bookmarks and history, from other devices, and keep that data in sync. Mozilla also said that it has no plans for a Firefox browser for the iPhone. "There are technical and logistical restrictions that make it difficult, if not impossible, to build the full Firefox browser for the iPhone," Mozilla said. BlackBerry PlayBook's QNX OS to power BlackBerry smartphones in the future Posted: 28 Sep 2010 01:15 PM PDT According to IntoMobile, during the BlackBerry Developer Conference today, one of RIM's vice presidents said that the QNX operating system, which powers RIM's newly announced BlackBerry PlayBook tablet, will eventually power BlackBerry smartphones and will replace the current operating system. RIM wasn't specific as to when this would happen, and given that devices running its new BlackBerry 6 operating system are still launching, we suspect it'll be a while until that happens. Samsung Galaxy Apollo Android smartphone launches on Telus Posted: 28 Sep 2010 11:58 AM PDT Telus is now offering the Samsung Galaxy Apollo, an Android powered smartphone. The Galaxy Apollo offers a 3.2-inch touchscreen, a 3 megapixel camera, WiFi, 150MB of internal memory, and up to 16GB of storage using a microSD card slot. The device comes with a headset and a 2GB microSD card. Telus is offering the Galaxy Apollo now for $249.99 CAD ($242.56) without a contract, or for as little as $49.99 CAD ($48.50) with a 3-year contract. Google's Schmidt says smartphones to outsell PCs in two years Posted: 28 Sep 2010 11:54 AM PDT Google's CEO, Eric Schmidt, spoke during the TechCrunch Disrupt conference today, and took time to offer his predictions for the smartphone market during the next two years. Schmidt said that he believes that smartphones will outsell PCs in two years time, according to IntoMobile. "What's interesting about mobile is that the mobile opportunity is so large it's breathtaking," Schmidt said, noting that Google is tweaking its business to adjust to the mobile boom. Best Buy kicks off free phone Fridays promotion Posted: 28 Sep 2010 11:34 AM PDT Today Best Buy announced that each Friday in October will be known as "Free Phone Fridays." Each Friday, Best Buy Mobile will offer four mobile phones, one from each carrier, for free with a 2-year contract. Each week will feature at least one high-end phone. The first phones, available on October 1, are the Samsung Fascinate from Verizon Wireless, the BlackBerry Curve (specific model not noted) from Sprint, the HTC Aria from AT&T, and the Samsung Gravity 3 from T-Mobile. AT&T to offer 16GB/32GB SanDisk microSDHC memory cards Posted: 28 Sep 2010 05:56 AM PDT Today AT&T announced that, beginning on October 3, it will carry 16GB and 32GB SanDisk microSDHC cards. The memory cards will be priced at $79.99 and $139.99, respectively, and will come with SanDisk's Media Manager software pre-installed. SanDisk Media Manager helps users sort their content, such as photos and media, and even properly formats the media before transferring it to a phone. He discussed some of the issues RIM has been facing with some countries, such as India, which are asking for access to encrypted communications.
