Firefox-like PreFox browser for Palm webOS in the works

An alpha version of Firefox for the Palm Pre is currently in its alpha build. A Mozilla employee named Dave Townsend has been working on the project, dubbed PreFox, which isn't officially backed by Mozilla, and says that it currently offers better support for multiple tabs, session restore, cookies and passwords, and history/bookmark sync with desktop versions of FireFox. PreFox requires webOS 1.4.5 and has only been tested on Sprint's Palm Pre. The download is available on

Samsung Captivate Galaxy S smartphone preoders begin on Rogers

Samsung's Android powered Captivate, a member of its Galaxy S family of phones, is now available for preorder on Rogers. The Captivate originally launched on AT&T and offers a 4-inch Super AMOLED display, a 1GHz Samsung Hummingbird processor, and a 5 megapixel camera. FCC to open TV airwaves for high-speed wireless broadband

The Federal Communications Commission approved a plan today to provide unused "white space" frequency from broadcast television networks for high-speed wireless broadband networks. The spectrum is the largest block, below 5GHz, to be freed up for unlicensed use in over 20 years.

Visa trials payWave mobile payment system in New York, Los Angeles

Visa is testing its payWave mobile payment system in New York and in Los Angeles, the company said recently. payWave lets Visa users pay for bus, subway, or train fares using payWave cards and mobile phones, a form of near-field communications (NFC) for mobile payments. Commuters in L.A.can only use the payWave cards. The technology works with a small embedded chip in a payment card or mobile phone, allowing users to wave their phone or card at a contact-less reader to pay their fares. It's accepted in New York City and on NJ Transit within The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, as well as on LA Metro transit lines.

Verizon could intro tiered pricing in four to six months

Verizon Communications' CEO, Ivan Seidenberg, said that he expects Verizon Wireless, the firm's wireless branch, to introduce tiered pricing. The move could come in the next four to six months, The Wall Street Journal said today. The move could be in sync with Verizon Wireless' LTE launch, when the carrier will likely intro new products and services as well. AT&T moved to a tiered pricing plan earlier this year, and so far it has been the only U.S. carrier to do so.

Kindle for Android app updated

Today Amazon updated its Kindle for Android application. The latest version allows users to add, edit, or delete noted and highlights within their ebooks. You can also search books for words or phrases and even lock the screen orientation in landscape or portrait mode. Finally, Amazon embedded the ability to look up specific words on Dictionary.com or directly from Wikipedia. The update is available now, for free, in the Android Market.

CEO: Verizon possibly switching to tiered data pricing soon

Today Verizon Communications' CEO said that the company's Verizon Wireless unit may switch to a tiered data pricing plan soon, and that he hopes the company's move to LTE for 4G might entice more manufacturers to build devices for it.

J.D. Power has released results of a survey that indicate Apple and LG customers are most satisfied with their phone purchases. The survey also indicates that customers are keeping their phones longer and paying more each month, but are paying lower prices for the phones.

LG to pre-load Shazam music app on Android smartphones

Today LG and Shazam announced that LG has agreed to pre-load the Shazam music discovery application onto its Android powered smartphones. Shazam has the ability to use a phone's microphone to identify songs and then provide information and purchasing options for the song. The application also lets users share music related events with friends on Facebook and Twitter, or via SMS and email. The pre-loaded app will include a 7 day trial of Shazam's premium services, too.

Marvell has officially announced its latest mobile application processor, the ARMADA 628. The ARMADA 628 is a tri-core processor with two cores clocked at 1.5GHz that also features support for large displays, 3D graphics, and 1080p HD encoding and decoding.

Sony Ericsson delays Xperia X10 family Android 2.1 update until late October

Sony Ericsson has reportedly pushed back its Android 2.1 update for its Xperia X10 lineup of phones until late October. Sony Ericsson launched the Xperia X10, the Xperia X10 mini, and the Xperia X10 mini pro with Android 1.6, and has promised an Android 2.1 update. However, most phones are now launching, or updating to, Android 2.2, the most recent Android flavor.
