Posted: 24 Sep 2010 10:23 AM PDT

Posted: 24 Sep 2010 09:38 AM PDT

Google's CEO, Eric Schmidt, spoke at the Google Zeitgeist conference last week, and during the press conference Danny Sullivan from Search Engine Land asked why Google doesn't force carriers to use a purely unchanged version of Android. The reasoning behind it being, some users don't always like what carriers include on their versions of Google Android devices (remember the Bing debate on the Samsung Fascinate?), or that updates aren't always rolled out as quickly to devices. Schmidt's response was, "If [Google] were to put those types of restrictions on an open source product, we'd be violating the principle of open source." Motorola, HTC, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, and LG all offer custom user interfaces on top of Android.
