RIM to offer 3G and 4G BlackBerry PlayBook tablets

Today Research In Motion (RIM) announced its first tablet, the BlackBerry PlayBook, a device with a 7-inch screen that's powered by a dual-core processor. It's going to debut with WiFi connectivity at first, however, RIM also noted that it plans to launch both 3G and 4G versions of the tablet in the future. RIM did not note when those would be available.

RIM outs BlackBerry Messenger social platform

Today Research In Motion (RIM) announced a new platform that developers can use to implement BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) functionality into their apps. The platform is called BlackBerry Messenger Social Platform, and RIM will allow developers to integrate BBM chat, content sharing, and invitations, directly into their applications. Applications using the new BlackBerry Messenger Social Platform will also be able to take advantage of BBM's push functionality.

RIM announces BlackBerry WebWorks application platform

Today during the BlackBerry Developer Conference in San Francisco, Research In Motion (RIM) announced its new next-generation application platform. BlackBerry WebWorks allows developers to create apps for BlackBerry using HTML5, CSS, and JavaScript. RIM says the new platform "merges the simplicity of HTML5 with the power of true multitasking, BlackBerry Platform services, true Push, and more."

RIM CEO: 115 million BlackBerry smartphones sold to date

Today during the BlackBerry Developer Conference 2010 in San Francisco, Research In Motion's co-CEO, Mike Laziridis, said that RIM has sold over 115 million BlackBerry smartphones to date. That includes 50 million active subscribers worldwide. There are also over 28 million BlackBerry Messenger users, and 1.5 million BBM users are added each month. Laziridis also noted that there are 250,000 active BlackBerry Enterprise Servers. We'll keep you up to date as more news is announced from the conference.

Bing for iPhone offers updated travel, maps services

Microsoft announced a new version of its Bing for iPhone app today. The latest version includes updated versions of Microsoft's Bing Maps and Bing Travel services. Bing Travel allows you to search for flight deals and the status of current flights. Bing Maps now offers a "What's nearby," feature, as well as enhancements to the maps, including traffic, points of interest, labels, and more. Bing also runs on Apple's iPod touch.

Verizon Wireless launching Star Wars Mobile App

Today Verizon Wireless announced that it will soon offer a Star Wars Mobile App for Android 2.1 smartphone owners. Star Wars Mobile will offer a bounty hunt visual ID game, and a sound and photo gallery. There are also four live wallpapers that are titled "Blast the Probe Droid," "Luke balancing Yoda," "Navigating the Asteroid Field," and "Watch Bespin's Cloud City." A trivia challenge game and Star Wars themed widgets are also included. The app will cost $2.99 in the Android market, and is only available to Verizon Wireless customers.

R2-D2 Motorola DROID 2 smartphone available from Verizon on Thursday

Today Verizon Wireless announced that the special edition R2D2 version of its Motorola DROID Android smartphone will be available in select Verizon Wireless stores on Thursday September 30. The device offers R2-D2 sounds, ring tones, four live wallpapers, a clock widget, and "The best of R2-D2" video with music. It also has an exclusive binoculars app. The device will be available for $249 after a $100 mail-in-rebate.

Ericsson acquires Nortel Multi-Service Switch business

Ericsson recently announced that it has agreed to acquire Nortel's Multi-Service Switch (MSS) business for $65 million. The purchase is still subject to court approval, but would help strengthen Ericsson's research and development services in its CDMA portfolio.

T-Mobile deploys first solar cell tower in Pennsylvania

T-Mobile USA has deployed a solar-powered cell phone tower in Chalfont, Pennsylvania, the first of its kind in the United States, according to GigaOm. The cell tower is powered by 12 solar panels, which is apparently enough to power the device, and even provide some power to the grid. GigaOm noted that T-Mobile could use the site for good PR using green marketing, but that it can take a while for the benefits of electricity savings from solar power to take effect. Solar powered wireless towers are more commonly used in developing countries.

Ryder Cup teams agree to halt Twitter, Facebook use

Captains for the Ryder Cup, Colin Montgomerie and Corey Pavin, and their respective teams, have agreed not to use Twitter or Facebook during the Ryder Cup competition. Whether from a PC or a phone, golfers from the United States and from Europe will not Tweet or post to Facebook during the week-long competition, which ends on October 4. "We feel that Tweeting and Facebook and all of these social sites can get one's self into trouble," Montgomerie told the AP. "It can be a little distracting sometimes. I think it's important to focus on the Ryder Cup and playing the matches," Pavin added, while speaking to AFP.

Mobile advertising firm Jumptap appoints new CEO

Today Jumptap, a mobile advertising firm founded in 2004, announced that George Bell is replacing Dan Olschwang as its new CEO. Olschwang will remain on the Jumptap board. Bell has served as CEO of Upromise, the chairman and CEO of Excite@Home, and as the CEO of Excite. Most recently, Bell served as a managing director at General Catalyst, a venture capital firm.

GHSA not endorsing total ban on cell phone use while driving

The Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) has tabled a proposed nationwide ban on driving while using a cell phone, the Washington Post is reporting. "We don't want this to become like the speeding issue, which we've already lost. Everybody speeds," Jonathan Adkins, a spokesman for the GHSA, said, noting that there isn't proof from existing laws that banning the act is very effective. Adkins said that the GHSA will continue to research the effects of driving and using a cell phone "with an eye toward revisiting the ban proposal," the Washington Post said.

According to new rumors, Microsoft's new Windows Phone 7 operating system is set to launch globally on October 21., with device availability in Europe expected on the same day. A U.S. launch could occur on November 8; that's in time for the holidays as promised by Microsoft.
