T-Mobile USA intros Kids Are Free family plans Posted: 08 Sep 2010 05:21 AM PDT Today T-Mobile introduced its new Kids Are Free family plans. Under the new terms, existing and new T-Mobile customers who sign up for a new family plan between now and November 2, 2010, won't have to pay the monthly additional line fee on up to three additional lines of their family plan until 2012. That means lines 3-5 are free until 2012, and they share the pooled family talk minutes. Read the full story here. |

RIM acquires software, employees from DataViz Posted: 08 Sep 2010 04:42 AM PDT Research in Motion (RIM) has confirmed that it has purchased "some" of the assets of DataViz, the software company that creates the popular "Documents to Go" application for opening Microsoft Office files on smartphones. Speaking to Digital Daily, a RIM spokesperson said: "RIM has acquired some of the assets of DataViz and hired the majority of its employees to focus on supporting the BlackBerry platform. Terms of the deal were not disclosed but the transaction was not material to RIM in the context of RIM's financial results." Read the full story here. |

Google TV to debut this fall in the U.S. Posted: 07 Sep 2010 08:11 AM PDT Google's CEO, Eric Schmidt, said that Google TV will launch in the United States this fall during the IFA tradeshow in Berlin. The Google TV service runs Android 2.1 and allows users to surf the web and run Android applications (provided they're supported) on their TV. Google TV uses Google's Chrome web browser, which will also be supported on tablet computers. Sony has said that it will offer Google TV services on its televisions and Samsung could follow suit. Samsung Galaxy Tab - $200 to $300, 10M units shipped in 2011 Posted: 07 Sep 2010 07:36 AM PDT During an interview with The Wall Street Journal, a Samsung product executive, Hankil Yoon, said that he expects Samsung's new Android powered Galaxy Tab tablet to retail for $200-$300. HTC Desire Android 2.2 Froyo update halted by O2 Posted: 07 Sep 2010 06:27 AM PDT O2 in the UK has halted all downloads of its recently released Android 2.2 Froyo update for the HTC Desire smartphone. A small number of users have reported issues installing the new Froyo update and others have complained of the phone hanging while displaying the O2 logo during the power-on sequence. Samsung reveals high-performance moviNAND embedded flash for smartphones Posted: 07 Sep 2010 06:21 AM PDT Today Samsung announced new high-performance embedded NAND flash chips for smartphones, dubbed "moviNAND." The chips are available in 8GB and 16GB modules and enable more efficient processing. They are also the first to be fully compatible with the new high-performance e-MMC v4.41 industry specification. Samsung began producing 8GB moviNAND chips using 30 nanometer class 32 gigabit NAND chips in July, and plans to begin producing 16GB models this month using 20nm NAND chips. Samsung boosts mobile display production by 10 times with new plant Posted: 07 Sep 2010 05:57 AM PDT Samsung's Mobile Display unit, which makes the touchscreens used in many phones, has said that a new manufacturing plant that goes online in July of 2011 will increase its production capacity tenfold from 3 million to 30 million units per month. Shortages of Samsung's AMOLED and Super AMOLED touchscreen displays have caused problems for companies like HTC, which has been unable to meet demand for some of its smartphones and has been forced to switch over to competing displays by Sony on some models. Samsung announces 5 megapixel smartphone CMOS imager for 30fps real-time video Posted: 07 Sep 2010 05:54 AM PDT This morning Samsung announced two new 1.4 micron CMOS imagers for mobile devices, including smartphones, digital cameras, and video cameras. The SK4E5, which was developed specifically for smartphones, sports a 5 megapixel CMOS image sensor designed for full resolution real-time video at 30 frames per second. It's designed for slim, small form factor smartphones. That chip is available now and mass production will begin during the fourth quarter of this yaer. Read the full story here. |

The processor offers two ARM Cortext A9 cores clocked at 1GHz, as well as support for recording 1080p video, multiple displays, and more.
