Samsung investigated by European Union over patent lawsuits

European Union regulators have announced that they will launch an investigation into Samsung's use of its patents in lawsuits against other companies. The regulators will look to see if Samsung has violated the fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory (FRAND) terms that it agreed upon when it was originally issued the patents.

House bill takes aim at Carrier IQ, other cell phone tracking software

Representative Ed Markey from Massachusetts has introduced a bill to the House of Representatives that aims to force carriers to inform users if their phones have cell phone tracking software such as Carrier IQ installed on them.

HTC forced back into court over IPCom patent case

An appeals court in Washington has ruled that the patent case brought against HTC by IPCom that was tossed out of court back in 2010 should be given another chance in front of the judge, forcing the companies to return to the courtroom to restate their arguments. The original court decision from 2010 deemed the patent that IPCom was using in its complaint was invalid, but the appeals court now claims that was an incorrect verdict. HTC and IPCom have sued each other in the U.S., the UK, and Germany over the use of the patent, which relates to how a phone finds cellular coverage while moving.

FCC asks for public's input on LightSquared issue

The Federal Communications Commission is asking for the public to comment on LightSquared's recent request that the GPS industry not receive legal protection from interference that may be caused by LightSquared's proposed 4G LTE network. LightSquared argues that GPS manufacturers have made "unlicensed and poorly designed" receivers that can listen in on LightSquared's frequencies and that the industry has had years to correct the issue, but has chosen not to. The GPS industry's counter argument is that a wireless network is improper use of the frequencies that LightSquared owns licenses to. The FCC is accepting comments on the matter until February 27.

Nokia to launch white Lumia 800 in Australia; rest of the world now hates Australia

Nokia has announced that Australia will be included in the latest round of expansion for its Windows Phone-powered Lumia line of smartphones. Nokia has also announced that Australians will have access to the device in a white color scheme in addition to the previously-released black, cyan, and magenta options.

Samsung Galaxy Note with LTE hits AT&T on February 19 for $299

Samsung has announced that its Galaxy Note smartphone/tablet hybrid will be joining the ranks of AT&T smartphones on February 19 for $299.99. The AT&T version of the Galaxy Note was originally announced at CES 2012 earlier this month, and includes support for AT&T's new 4G LTE network. Like the non-LTE version, the Galaxy Note features a 5.3-inch, 1280 x 800 pixel Super AMOLED display and comes with the S Pen stylus for pen interaction. The LTE Galaxy Note is powered by a 1.5GHz, dual-core processor and has 1GB of RAM. Customers that are anxious to get their hands on the Galaxy Note early can place a pre-order online or in stores on February 5 and Samsung promises that those who order by February 15 will receive the Galaxy Note by February 17.

Motorola offers unlocked "Developer Edition" RAZR in Europe

Motorola has announced the release of an unlocked "Developer Edition" of its RAZR Android smartphone that will soon be available throughout Europe. This special version includes an unlocked bootloader, which will allow developers and hackers to easily load custom versions of the Android operating system on the device.

Samsung refreshes the original Galaxy S again with the Galaxy S Advance

Samsung is apparently intent on keeping the Galaxy S name going, as it has just announced the Galaxy S Advance, an update of the original Galaxy S that was initially released in 2010. The Galaxy S Advance features a faster processor than its predecessor and includes a slightly-curved display, not unlike the curved displays found on the Nexus S and Galaxy Nexus smartphones that Samsung builds for Google.

T-Mobile UK introduces The Full Monty plan with unlimited everything

T-Mobile's UK arm announced a new plan for subscribers today that is said to be the first plan to offer truly unlimited services in the UK. The U.S. carriers have been peddling unlimited plans for a number of years now, but unlimited options have not been available in the UK until now.

McAfee rolls out Mobile Security 2.0 suite for Android, BlackBerry, Symbian devices

Today McAfee announced the latest version of its security software for mobile devices, McAfee Mobile Security 2.0. The application is available for Android smartphones and tablets as well as smartphones running on the BlackBerry OS and Symbian OS platforms.
