Verizon Wireless adds the most new subscribers in three years during Q4 2011

Verizon Communications has just released its Q4 2011 financial earnings statement, and from the looks of things, its Verizon Wireless division had a record quarter. According to the report, Verizon added more subscribers in Q4 than it had in any quarter in the past three years.

AT&T, T-Mobile submit application with FCC for spectrum swap

AT&T is following through on its promise to allocate part of its spectrum to T-Mobile USA after the withdraw of its bid to purchase the smaller carrier last month. The two carriers have filed an application with the Federal Communications Commission to transfer $1 billion worth of spectrum from AT&T to T-Mobile.

Sony has announced a new image sensor for cell phone cameras that promises to offer a more compact size while preserving the ability to capture high quality images. The new sensor is a backside-illuminated CMOS chip that promises to have superior low light capabilities.

Estimates peg Nokia Lumia shipments at over 1 million

Bloomberg has rounded up 22 analyst estimates to come up with an average figure for how many Lumia smartphones have been shipped by Nokia to date. The number that Bloomberg landed on was 1.3 million - an impressive amount considering the Lumia line has only been on the market since mid-November.

Smartphone, tablet users spending more time in apps than on the web says study

A recent study by Flurry Analytics claims that mobile device users are now spending more of their time within apps than browsing the web, reversing previous trends. While both activities have increased over a year ago, mobile app usage has grown faster and is now more popular than web surfing on smartphones and tablets.

AT&T switches up Sony PlayStation Vita data plan options

AT&T announced at CES 2012 that it would be carrying the Sony PlayStation Vita portable connected gaming device, and with that announcement, it said that customers would be able to choose between two data plans for it - a $15 per month plan that offered 250MB of data, and a $25 per month plan with 2GB of data. Now that AT&T has introduced new data plans for its smartphone and tablet devices, it has decided to change the offerings for the Vita as well. Gone is the $25 per month option, replaced by a 3GB, $30 per month plan. It appears that users will still be able to choose the smaller data package if they desire. The PlayStation Vita is due to hit AT&T's shelves on February 22 for $299.
