Google says there are now 250 million Android devices in use

During the investor call for Google's Q4 2011 financial report, CEO Larry Page revealed that there are now 250 million Android devices in use across the world. This is 50 million more than the number that was reported in November. Page also revealed that there have been 11 billion apps downloaded from the Android Market so far and reiterated figures touting 3.7 million devices activated over the Christmas 2011 weekend and 700,000 Android devices being activated on a daily basis.

Sprint updates HTC EVO 4G, EVO Design 4G, Samsung Epic 4G to remove Carrier IQ

Sprint has followed up its update for the HTC EVO 3D that removed Carrier IQ with updates for the HTC EVO 4G, EVO Design 4G, and Samsung Epic 4G smartphones that also remove the software. Each update also includes a set of bug fixes and performance improvements for the respective devices. Users should get a notification on their phones when the updates are ready to be downloaded and installed. Sprint expects the roll-out to be completed gradually over the next ten days.

Google Q4 2011 earnings: $10.6 billion in revenue, 90 million Google+ users

Google just released its Q4 2011 financial report, and as is usually the case with the search giant, both revenues and profits are up from last year. The company reported $10.58 billion in revenue for Q4 2011 with net income of $2.71 billion.

Samsung has announced that it has sold over 5 million Galaxy S II smartphones in its home market of South Korea. This is just the latest milestone for the popular device, which has seen over 10 million units sold worldwide.

EU picks February 13 as judgement day for Google purchase of Motorola

The European Union has set a new to date to decide on the proposed purchase of Motorola Mobility by Google. Google initially announced its plans to purchase the phone manufacturer for $12.5 billion in August, and has been waiting for government approval before it can complete the transaction.

Amazon has released another software update for its Kindle Fire tablet that offers a number of bug fixes, improved performance, and new features. Bing Maps to show Nokia branding on all mobile devices in the future

According to Nokia CEO Stephen Elop, the terms of its deal between Nokia and Microsoft will include Nokia branding on all Bing Maps properties in the near future. That means that all mobile devices that use Bing Maps - even those made by other manufacturers - will see Nokia branding on the maps themselves.

Sony Ericsson posts big loss in Q4 2011 as it moves away from feature phones

Today, smartphone maker Sony Ericsson announced its Q4 and year-end 2011 performance results. While the company saw a 65 percent increase in sales of its Xperia line of smartphones over Q4 of last year, it still posted a very large loss of 247 million EUR for the year.

Virgin Mobile to begin throttling smartphone data speeds on March 23

Last year prepaid carrier Virgin Mobile announced that it would begin to throttle the speeds of smartphone users that went over a certain threshold of data usage per month. The plan was to enact the new policy in October, but the carrier decided to postpone it until 2012. Now Virgin says that it will begin throttling speeds for users in March.
