O2 moving forward with London Olympic Wi-Fi rollout

O2 is hedging forth with its Wi-Fi network in London that will cover users in Westminster, Kensington, and Chelsea. The network is in anticipation of the London 2012 Olympics and is being called the world's largest Wi-Fi hub. The network services will be offered free to its users. According to O2's COO, Derek McManus, "This groundbreaking deal - the first of its kind in the UK - will see us deliver high quality connectivity across London in time for London 2012 [Olympics]. Our longer-term aim is to expand our footprint of O2 Wifi, which is open to everyone, and also intelligently enhance our services at street level, where people need the network the most."

ASUS teases 7-inch tablet with NVIDIA Tegra 3 that will sell for $249

During the NVIDIA press conference at CES 2012 today, ASUS teased a new 7-inch tablet that will be sure to give the Amazon Kindle Fire a run for its money. The unnamed tablet will use a quad-core, NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor which is impressive in its own right. But even more impressive will be the sticker price that ASUS is going for with the tablet, as it expects to bring it to market with a price tag of $249. That is a pretty low price to get into some quad-core Tegra 3 action, so color us intrigued.

Google Voice for the iPhone updated to fix outgoing call bug

Google has released an update to the Google Voice app for the iPhone that addresses the outgoing call bug introduced with the last update to the app. The bug would prevent the phone from using the Google Voice routing number when making outgoing calls. An update for the Google+ app for iOS was released today that lets users start video Hangouts right from their mobile device. Google announced that this feature would be coming to mobile apps last month, and Android devices gained the video hangout creation ability a couple of weeks ago. In addition, the iOS app has a new user interface for viewing photos and miscellaneous bug fixes. Google+ for iOS is free and available in the iTunes App Store now.

Samsung has announced that the Galaxy Tab 7.7 tablet will be coming to Verizon Wireless complete with LTE connectivity on board. The Galaxy Tab 7.7 was originally announced at the IFA trade show in September, and features a 7.7-inch, 1280 x 800 pixel display and a 1.4GHz, dual-core processor. It also sports a 7.9mm thick frame and runs Android 3.2 Honeycomb with Samsung's TouchWiz interface. Verizon will offer the Galaxy Tab 7.7 in the coming weeks for an yet-to-be-announced price.

Verizon has announced quietly that its BlackBerry Torch 9850 and BlackBerry Bold 9930 will soon be updated to the new BlackBerry 7.1 OS that RIM launched earlier today. The new OS adds mobile hotspot capabilities, which will allow users to connect up to five Wi-Fi enable devices to their BlackBerry smartphones. If the original black or new white color options of the Motorola DROID RAZR don't tickle your fancy, Verizon Wireless hopes that another color will, as it has announced the upcoming availability of the DROID RAZR in purple. The Prince-approved version of the DROID RAZR has the same specs as the original, including the 4.3-inch qHD Super AMOLED display, 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 8 megapixel camera, 4G LTE capability, and Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system. Verizon will offer the purple DROID RAZR in the coming weeks for $199.99 with a new two-year contract.

Sprint has announced that the Sierra Wireless Tri-Network Hotspot will be the first mobile hotspot device to support its forthcoming 4G LTE network. The Tri-Network Hotspot supports 3G, 4G WiMAX, and 4G LTE networks. It will be joined by the Google Galaxy Nexus and the LG Viper as the first devices available for Sprint's LTE network. Today at CES in Las Vegas, wireless carrier AT&T announced a new magazine-style application store, AppCenter, that will help get HTML5 and Android apps to smartphone users. AT&T hopes that this will increase HTML-5 applications and be easily linked to Google's Android Market for developers. Unlike other app stores, the AT&T AppCenter will drive users to existing app stores, like Android Market, so that developers don't have to worry about yet another application store that they have to place their applications on. The beta of the AT&T App Center launches in beta form today.

Sprint LTE Google Galaxy Nexus gets 16GB storage, Google Wallet compatibility

Sprint has revealed more details about the Google Galaxy Nexus smartphone on a landing page highlighting its forth-coming 4G LTE network. According to the page, the Sprint version of the Galaxy Nexus will have 16GB of internal storage like the HSPA+ model (the LTE version for Verizon Wireless has 32GB), and it will support Google Wallet, unlike other versions of the Galaxy Nexus. Verizon caused quite a commotion when it said that the version of the Galaxy Nexus that it carries would not support Google Wallet, but it doesn't look like Sprint users will have to worry about that.

Sprint has posted a new landing page for its upcoming 4G LTE services that not only further confirms that the Google Galaxy Nexus will be headed to Sprint, but also outs the previously-unknown LG Viper. The Viper appears to have lower specs than the Galaxy Nexus, as it features a 4-inch WVGA display. It packs a 1.2GHz, dual-core processor and features Google Wallet with NFC, along with support for Sprint's forth-coming LTE network. Sprint also says that the Viper is composed of recyclable materials and is eco-friendly. That's about all of the information we have right now, but we will bring you more as we get it.

ASUS Eee Pad MeMO 7-inch tablet coming to America in Q2

ASUS has announced that it will finally deliver its Eee Pad MeMO tablet to consumers in the U.S. sometime in Q2 of this year, according to the folks over at The Verge. The MeMO is a 7-inch touchscreen tablet that offers a 1.2GHz Qualcomm 8260 processor under the hood to power its Android operating system. It also features a 1.2MP user facing camera as well as a 5MP imager on back for video and stills. The tablet's 4400mAh battery provides up to 8.5 hours of video playback, according the manufacturer.

USB 3.0 headed to smartphones, tablets by end of 2012

The USB Implementers Forum has announced that the high-speed USB 3.0 protocol will find its way to smartphones and tablets by the end of 2012. Already available for desktop and laptop computers, USB 3.0 will allow mobile devices to transfer data to and from a host computer at rates of up to 100MB per second. This is nearly fifteen times faster than what the current USB 2.0 technology offers. The new USB 3.0 ports will be backwards compatible with USB 2.0 computers and accessories. No manufacturers have committed to using USB 3.0 in mobile devices just yet, but the consortium says that it should be commercially available before the year is out.
