Posted: 03 Jan 2012 12:21 PM PST

A number of wannabe apps that try to mimic the capabilities of Apple's Siri on the iPhone 4S have shown up in the Android Market over the past few months, but none went so far as to appropriate the Siri name and app icon - except for one. Thankfully, Google has caught on to the infringing app, the so-called "Siri for Android," and has pulled it from the Market.

ASUS Transformer Prime to get Android 4.0 ICS upgrade January 12

Posted: 03 Jan 2012 09:42 AM PST

ASUS has revealed that its Transformer Prime tablet, the first tablet on the market with NVIDIA's Tegra 3 quad-core processor, will get its upgrade to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich starting on January 12. Though the Transformer Prime was released to much excitement, the buzz was tempered by the fact that it would launch with Android 3.2 Honeycomb instead of the new Android 4.0 operating system. Users needn't worry much longer, though, as the update will be available in a mere 10 days. In the meantime, ASUS is releasing a separate maintenance update that improves touch performance and camera focusing operations. Additionally, the tablet-maker says it is working on a bootloader unlock tool that will allow users to install custom versions of Android if they desire - while voiding the warranty, of course.

T-Mobile puts 4G smartphones, tablets on sale this coming weekend

Posted: 03 Jan 2012 06:59 AM PST

Though T-Mobile will not be purchased by AT&T after all, the fourth-place carrier is still offering deals on its popular smartphones and tablets. This coming weekend (January 6-8), T-Mobile is offering some discounts on a number of its popular 4G devices, including the HTC Amaze 4G and the Samsung Galaxy S II when picked up with an Unlimited Value plan, which include unlimited voice and texting, as well as various sized data allotments. Buyers who sign a new contract can grab a high-end phone or tablet for a down payment of as little as $49.99 after rebate, a discount over the devices' regular prices. Phones and tablets still require 20 additional monthly payments as part of the purchase cost, but this does get you access to less expensive monthly contract rates. Sound confusing? It is. But you still might be able to save a few bucks if you can wrap your head around the details. The deals will be offered both online and in-store.

Posted: 03 Jan 2012 06:01 AM PST

The 3G-equipped version of the HTC Flyer tablet and the 4G-ready variant known as the EVO View 4G sold on Sprint may have been upgraded to Android 3.2 Honeycomb already, but now the Wi-Fi-only version of the 7-inch tablet is getting in on the action. Though this isn't the upgrade to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich that everyone would rather have, the update does bring a proper tablet operating system to the Flyer, along with a new version of HTC's Sense interface for tablets. Also included are various performance improvements and support for HTC's Scribe pen input. Users should now be able to download the update directly to the tablet by going to the software update function in the Settings menu.

RIM puts all BlackBerry PlayBook models on sale for $299

Posted: 03 Jan 2012 05:37 AM PST

Following the holiday sales that saw the BlackBerry PlayBook fall to as low as $199 for the 16GB model, RIM is now offering all three versions of the beleaguered tablet for the same $299 price. That's right, you can get the 16GB, 32GB, or 64GB models for up to $400 off of their original prices. Why one would opt to purchase the lower capacity models instead of just shooting for the big gun right away is anyone's guess, but head on over to RIM's online store by February 4 (or until stock runs out) to take advantage of the deal - if you are interested.
