Google Maps for Android updated, improves battery performance

Google Maps for Android has gotten a refresh and now offers better battery life and faster location refreshes in Latitude. Other optimizations include estimated location if GPS signal is lost using the vehicles speed, increased route options for public transit directions, and a Google feedback report in Settings.

Sony Xperia S smartphone coming to O2 UK

O2 has announced that it will soon offer Sony's new flagship smartphone, the Xperia S, to its customers. The Xperia S is an Android smartphone that offers a massive 4.3-inch color HD touchscreen display and a 1.5GHz dual-core processor. Other features include a 12MP rear facing camera for video and pictures as well as a 1.3MP user facing camera for video chats. The Xperia S also offers a micro-HDMI port and NFC capabilities. No word yet on exact launch date or pricing from the carrier.

Motorola wants to release fewer smartphones in the future

Motorola CEO Sanjay Jha revealed to reporters at CES 2012 today that the company wants to make fewer smartphones in the future so that it can better focus its marketing dollars. Jha also provided reasoning behind why Motorola (and presumably other manufacturers) insist on skinning their Android devices.

Lenovo K800 is the first smartphone with an Intel processor

Lenovo and Intel have announced that the Chinese company will be the first manufacturer to release a smartphone with an Intel processor inside of it. The new phone will use Intel's Atom Z2460 platform, formerly known by its codename of "Medfield."

T-Mobile announces 42Mbps HSPA+ upgrade in 12 new markets

At a media mixer at the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, T-Mobile CEO Philipp Humm announced that his company has doubled HSPA+ 4G data speeds in 12 new markets, bringing them to 42Mbps. This brings the high-speed 42Mbps speeds to over 184 million Americans in 175 markets. The company also announced that it has rolled out 21Mbps HSPA+ to 9 new markets, for a total of 217 markets and over 200 million Americans.

Amazon Kindle Store released for iPad, thumbs nose at Apple's 30 percent cut

Amazon is back to selling books on the iPad without sharing any revenue with Apple. How is it doing this, you might ask? The mega-etailer has designed an iPad-friendly Kindle Store that can be accessed through the Safari browser on the tablet. The touch-friendly interface lets Kindle users peruse the library of books and make purchases, and prevents Apple from being able to take 30 percent of the revenue from each book sold. The new Kindle Store for iPad joins the Cloud Reader that was quietly launched back in August of last year. Users can head to amazon.com/iPadKindleStore to access the new store.

ViewSonic ViewPad E70 promises to be a 7-inch tablet for $170

ViewSonic is planning to give the Amazon Kindle Fire, Barnes & Noble NOOK Tablet, and the just-announced 7-inch ASUS tablet a run for their money, as it has announced plans to launch a 7-inch tablet for $170. Unlike the other budget tablets mention, the ViewPad E70 has a single-core processor and not a dual-core or quad-core chip.

Samsung Galaxy Note headed to Telus Canada with LTE in tow

It looks like AT&T won't be the only carrier in North America to get the massive Samsung Galaxy Note with 4G LTE, as Canadian carrier Telus has revealed that it will be carrying the smartphone/tablet hybrid when its LTE network launches in Q1 2012. Telus did not say when its LTE network would exactly go live, or when the Galaxy Note would launch or cost, but if it intends on launching this quarter, we should know very shortly.

Sprint says its Google Galaxy Nexus will have 32GB of storage

Yesterday, we reported that the Google Galaxy Nexus headed to Sprint would have 16GB of internal storage, not the 32GB that the Verizon Wireless version has. Our information was based on a landing page for Sprint's new 4G LTE services. We just got word from Sprint that its landing page had the specification incorrect, and the Galaxy Nexus that it will carry will indeed have 32GB of internal storage. Sprint customers can now rest easy knowing they will have just as much room for media and apps on the Galaxy Nexus when it launches on their network of choice later this year.

Samsung Captivate finally upgraded to Android 2.3 Gingerbread

AT&T and Samsung have finally released the Android 2.3 Gingerbread upgrade for the Captivate smartphone released in 2010. The upgrade offers everything that you would come to expect from Android 2.3, including improved performance, an enhanced user interface, better copy and paste, and a new on-screen keyboard. Unfortunately, as with the Android 2.2 Froyo update for the Captivate, users will have to plug their smartphones into their computers and install the upgrade with Samsung's Kies Mini software, as it is not available over-the-air. Microsoft to offer unlocked Nokia Lumia 800 smartphones in U.S. stores

During the keynote presentation for CES 2012 last night, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer revealed that the Nokia Lumia 800 smartphone would be available in Microsoft stores in the U.S. in the coming months. The Microsoft stores will sell the phone unlocked, so it can be used with any GSM carrier. Mr. Ballmer did not give an exact date as to when it would be available or how much it will cost when it goes on sale. Various importers have been selling the Lumia 800 unlocked in the U.S. for prices just under $600 in recent months.

The Samsung Galaxy Note for AT&T that was announced at CES 2012 features a massive 5.3-inch, 1280 x 800 pixel Super AMOLED display and a dual-core 1.5GHz processor that powers Android 2.3 Gingerbread and Samsung's own TouchWiz user interface. As much tablet as smartphone, this LTE 4G capable hybrid device can be used to make calls, but is really quite a handful to juggle.

Nokia Lumia Windows Phone smartphones headed to Canada

Nokia has announced that the Lumia 800 and Lumia 710 Windows Phone smartphones will soon be available in Canada. The Lumia 800 will be available exclusively from Telus, and buyers will be able to get it in the black, cyan, or magenta color options that are available elsewhere. The Lumia 710 will be available from Rogers and will be priced at an attractive $49 on-contract. Expect both phones to hit shelves by February.

Apple serves iOS 5.1 beta 3 to developers, restores 3G toggle

Apple has made available its iOS 5.1 beta 3 for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch to developers via its program portal and over-the-air. Beta 3 restores the ability for iPhone 4S users to toggle 3G on and off again, which will help save on battery life. The release notes also indicate that the new version of iOS offers a new API to mark files and directories that should not be backed up as well as some bug fixes and minor improvements.
