Motorola estimates $3.4 billion in sales, 5.3 million smartphones shipped in Q4

Motorola Mobility released a preliminary estimate of its fourth quarter 2011 performance this afternoon, and it seems that the company performed below expectations. Added to that, Motorola says that it only expects "modest profitability" on its revenues - not exactly a comforting sign for shareholders.

Sprint clarifies unlimited data policy amidst reports of throttling

Quite a commotion was caused among the tech media yesterday when Dow Jones reported that Sprint CEO Dan Hesse said that the carrier was throttling data speeds for the top one percent of its users - contradicting the carrier's long-standing advertisements of unlimited data. As it turns out, the original story happened to misquote Mr. Hesse, prompting Sprint to post a clarification to its support forums today.

Sprint ices plans with LightSquared pending government approvals

Not a week after it was revealed that Sprint has given LightSquared an additional 30 days to gain approval for its 4G LTE network, the carrier has revealed that it is halting any further investment in LightSquared until the government has its final say.

Google Galaxy Nexus headed to Rogers, Telus next week

Samsung has announced that the Google Galaxy Nexus Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich smartphone will be available from Canadian carriers Rogers and Telus on January 13. Competitors Bell and Virgin Mobile have been offering the Galaxy Nexus in Canada since December 8. With the availability of the phone from Rogers and Telus, the Galaxy Nexus will be offered by all three of Canada's national carriers. In the U.S., the Galaxy Nexus is only available from Verizon Wireless, but a recent prematurely posted advertisement pegs it for release on Sprint in the near future, as well.

Samsung released a preview of its Q4 2011 earnings today, and the company predicts that it will post record results for the holiday quarter. While Samsung will no longer offer exact figures for the number of smartphones or tablets that it ships each quarter, analysts predict that this was a record quarter for smartphone shipments for the company.
