Apple acquires flash memory drive maker Anobit

Apple is reported to have recently bought flash drive maker Anobit for $390 million. Anobit is an Israeli based company that manufacturers flash memory drives used in Apple devices such as the iPhone and iPad. Apple confirmed the acquisition on January 10, but declined to comment on the final price of the purchase. "Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans," Steve Dowling, a spokesman for Cupertino, California-based Apple said.

Google Search for Android refreshed with simpler, faster user interface

Google yesterday announced that its Google Search for Android devices has been improved. The new update to the search functionality offers a new and improved user interface, which the company claims will be much simpler for users. In addition, performance on the whole is expected to be quicker and smoother, and users should see improvements in country specific search and see new grouping of search results by type. Search users can also now long press a result to easily remove history items. If you have Android 2.2, 2.3, or 3.x, you can download the app from Android Market now.

Facebook Comments Box for mobile updated

Facebook yesterday announced an update to its Comments Box plugin for mobile users so people can comment no matter what mobile device they are using. The new functionality will automatically appear on mobile versions of media sites that offer Facebook's Comment Box with hopes to improve the quality of online conversations and traffic for media sites.

T-Mobile CTO says next iPhone will support AWS bands

T-Mobile has been left out of the Apple iPhone party thus far because the bands that its network uses for 3G service are not supported by the current iPhone models that Apple produces. That could change in the future though, and the carrier's chief technology officer says that the next cellular modems that Apple will use do indeed have the capability of supporting T-Mobile's special AWS frequencies.

Vringo Facetones adds a face to phone calls for iPhone users

Apple iPhone users can now get Facetones for calls to easily identify callers. Vringo's Facetones application currently pulls pics from Facebook accounts for both outgoing and incoming phone calls so users can easily see who is calling from the full screen photo displayed on their handset. Vringo is expected to expand its coverage with support from other social network and photo sites down the road. The Vringo Factones app for iPhone is free from the AppStore or iTunes.

TomTom navigation app gets social for iPhone, iPad users

At CES in Las Vegas, GPS manufacturer TomTom announced that its app for Apple's iPhone and iPad will soon be socially connected with Facebook and Twitter while on the go. The new functionality lets users easily navigate to friends, family, events, and places with information from taken from the social networks as well as allows users to share their arrival time and destinations on Twitter, Facebook, or via text message. The new TomTom app refresh is expected to be available in Q1 of this year.

Comcast rolls out live TV to iPad users

Comcast launched its AnyPlay live TV streaming functionality for users of Apple's iPad in select markets. Comcast's Xfinity HD Triple Play customers, using a WiFi connection on their iPads, can stream live television direct to their devices at no additional cost from the cable company. According the company, AnyPlay live streaming is expected to hit Motorola's XOOM Android tablet very soon.

Moneto, a new service from DeviceFidelity and Spring Card Systems, resolves the problem that plagues many Near Field Communications-based payments systems: most phones on the market do not have NFC technology built in to them. The new moneto microSD card features an NFC chip on it, and can be used with any Android smartphone or tablet that supports microSD card expansion.
