Samsung trial continues despite Apple's call for severe punishment Posted: 03 Aug 2012 04:38 AM PDT U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh denied Apple's motion to find Samsung guilty of patent infringement as punishment for "bad faith litigation." Apple requested that the court rule against Samsung for releasing excluded evidence to the press, but Judge Koh decided to proceed with the trial. Read the full story here. |
Ting will sell Samsung Galaxy S III on Sprint LTE-powered MVNO Posted: 02 Aug 2012 03:55 PM PDT Ting, the MVNO that uses adjustable billing based on which tier of service a customer uses each month, announced that it will offer the Samsung Galaxy S III to its customers. Available in Pebble Blue or Marble White when it goes on sale, the Galaxy S III will be the first device sold by Ting that is compatible with Sprint's LTE network. Ting has begun accepting pre-orders for the 16GB Galaxy S III, which is sold at an unsubsidized price of $529. The 32 GB model costs $579. Gmail for Android update improves support for 7-inch tablets Posted: 02 Aug 2012 07:14 AM PDT On the heels of an update to the iOS Gmail app, Google has updated its Android app in order to improve the UI on 7-inch tablets like the Nexus 7. Gmail has made small adjustments for Android 4.0 or higher tablets by improving the layout of messages in the multi-pane landscape mode. Text is less likely to get clipped, and navigation fits the screen more comfortably. Google also added a new Labels API to support third-party apps. The Labels API allows authorized apps to retrieve access to specific labels in Gmail on Android devices running version 2.2 or higher. Read the full story here. |

Sharp shipping new iPhone displays to Apple this month Posted: 02 Aug 2012 06:33 AM PDT Sharp has revealed that it will begin shipping displays for the next iPhone to Apple this month. Sharp has long been a supplier of displays for Apple's smartphone, and Apple is expected to launch a new version of the iPhone in either September or October. Sharp did not provide any more details about the screens, though rumors have long said that the next iPhone will feature a larger display than previous models, perhaps in the 4 inch range. AT&T plans to buy NextWave Wireless, will gain licenses for WCS and AWS spectrum Posted: 02 Aug 2012 06:05 AM PDT AT&T announced today that it has agreed to purchase NextWave Wireless. NextWave owns licenses to spectrum in the Wireless Communication Services (WCS) and Advanced Wireless Services (AWS) bands, which AT&T plans to use for its 4G LTE network. AT&T has already petitioned the Federal Communications Commission for permission to use the 2.3GHz WCS spectrum for LTE. This 2.3GHz WCS spectrum is currently used for satellite radio services. The FCC has yet to approve AT&T's request. As part of the transaction with NextWave, AT&T will acquire all of the company's equity for $25 million, plus a contingent payment of another $25 million. Additionally, AT&T will acquire all of NextWave's outstanding debt, worth a total of $600 million. The purchase is subject to review by the FCC and other regulatory bodies.
