Sony Mobile to lay off 1,000 workers, relocate headquarters to Tokyo

Sony Mobile will reduce its workforce and relocate its base of operations from Lund, Sweden to Tokyo, Japan. The company, formerly known as Sony Ericsson, has announced plans to lay off 1,000 workers, about 15 percent of its workforce and consultants, and focus its efforts in Japan as a way to boost productivity.

Boost Mobile announces Samsung Galaxy S II 4G for $369 with no-contract

Boost Mobile has announced that it will begin selling the Samsung Galaxy S II 4G. The prepaid carrier revealed at a press event in New York City that it will offer a rebranded version of the Samsung Epic 4G Touch that Sprint previously sold. The Galaxy S II 4G will launch on September 6 for $369.99 with no contract.

Verizon set to launch Nokia Windows 8 phone this year

Verizon may soon do something it hasn't done since May 2011 - introduce a new Windows 8 smartphone. Bloomberg reports that Verizon plans to sell a Windows Phone 8 device made by Nokia. Microsoft, Nokia, and Verizon all declined to answer questions about the release of the phone, but Bloomberg says a source has told the company of plans to launch this year.

U.S. Justice Department seizes domains of Android piracy websites

The U.S. Department of Justice has seized the domain name of three websites accused of publishing pirated Android apps. The websites - applanet.net, appbucket.net, and snappzmarket.com - allegedly distributed illegal copies of paid Android apps to visitors, including FBI agents who downloaded "thousands" of copyrighted apps. The DOJ then coordinated with several other agencies, including law enforcement officials in France and the Netherlands, to execute search warrants and seize control of the domains. U.S. Attorney Sally Quillian Yates says the DOJ will continue to seize domains of websites violating copyright.

Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 will enable better games thanks to their compatibility with the Unity 3D game engine. At its Unite conference in Amsterdam today, Unity Technologies confirmed that its Unity 4 3D game development tools will support both Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8.
