Flipboard improves Android app navigation, adds in-app hints

Flipboard has improved its popular reading app by making it easier to navigate on Android. The app now displays titles with drop-down menus to change views within certain sections. It also improves importing Google Reader feeds and tags, and adds the ability to make Gilt Taste purchases from within the app. Just in case users might be new or need help figuring out how to move around, Flipboard includes in-app hints that point out which UI elements control major features. The hints, which are similar to what is displayed when someone first launches an Android 4.0 device, can be disabled in the settings menu. Flipboard is available for download in the Google Play Store.

Verizon updates Motorola DROID 4 to Ice Cream Sandwich, adds global roaming

Verizon has confirmed that the Motorola DROID 4 update to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich is starting today. The carrier announced that an over-the-air update will add several new features and improve performance of the DROID 4.

Verizon brings Viewdini video aggregation app to iPhone and iPad

Verizon Wireless has released an iOS version of Viewdini, a video aggregation app first made available for Android. Like its Android counterpart, Viewdini is a video discovery tool that finds movies and TV shows available to stream on an iPhone or iPad. The app doesn't actually stream content directly, but it searches popular destinations like HuluPlus, iTunes, and Netflix to locate which products stream a particular episode or movie. Viewdini also lists whether any of the 18 providers in its database requires a monthly subscription or individual purchase to access content. The free app is available for download in iTunes.

Google buys Frommer's travel guide to boost local listings

John Wiley & Sons, Inc. announced today that it will sell all of its travel assets, including the Frommer's brand, to Google. Following an announcement in March that Wiley would sell some products, the company reached an agreement to sell its travel assets to Google for an undisclosed amount.

Sprint launching Motorola Photon Q 4G LTE on Aug. 19 for $199.99

The Motorola Photon Q 4G LTE will become Sprint's fifth LTE-capable device when it goes on sale later this month. Announced last month following Sprint's second quarter earning's call, the Photon Q 4G LTE will launch August 19 for $199.99 on a two-year agreement. Sprint has begun accepting pre-orders on its website. In addition to LTE compatibility, the Photon Q 4G LTE has a five-row QWERTY keyboard, 4.3-inch screen, 1.5 GHz processor, and 1 GB of RAM. Motorola has confirmed that the Photon 4G LTE will launch with an unlocked bootloader, which will allow users to load custom software versions onto the phone.

BBC iPlayer improves video playback and adds Retina graphics for new iPad

The BBC has improved its iPlayer iOS app to better serve video to British users. While the latest update addresses unnamed bug fixes that will improve performance, iPlayer viewers will be most pleased by the improvements made to video playback. The app has also added retina graphics for the higher quality display on the new iPad and better Voice Over controls. The update is available now in iTunes.

Barnes & Noble cuts up to $50 off Nook tablets

Barnes & Noble has cut the price of its Nook Tablet and Nook Color devices. The Nook Tablet now costs $179 for the 8GB model, and $199 for the 16GB model. Barnes & Noble also dropped the price of the Nook Color, a digital reading device with tablet features, to $149.

Motorola cutting 4,000 jobs and closing one-third of its facilities

Motorola Mobility will layoff a quarter of its workforce. The Google subsidiary filed plans with the SEC to cut 4,000 jobs from its payroll, bringing its employee total from about 20,000 to fewer than 16,000. Two-thirds of the layoffs will happen at offices outside of the U.S.
