Android 2.2 Froyo coming to Verizon's Motorola DROID next week

Today Verizon Wireless informed us that its first Android powered smartphone, the Motorola DROID, will receive an over the air update to the Android 2.2 Froyo operating system next week. Android 2.2 adds new functionality to the Android platform and greatly improves the speed of third party applications as well as the web browser. Sprint announced just yesterday that its HTC EVO 4G will also receive a Froyo update next week.

The LG Vu Plus is a QWERTY messaging feature phone that is equipped with a touchscreen display and support for AT&T's mobile TV service. It offers users an auto-focus camera, a mediocre web browser, and solid messaging support.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini Pro on sale now at O2 U.K.

Following Vodafone's recent announcement to offer Sony Ericsson's X10 Mini Pro, O2 U.K. has decided to join in on the fun and has announced that it is now offering the smartphone as well. The tiny Android-powered handset offers a full slide-out QWERTY keyboard, 2.5-inch QVGA touchscreen display, a 5-megapixel camera, as well as quick access to email, navigation, and social networks. Samsung SGH-i917 Cetus revealed as Windows Phone 7 device

Today the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) posted a small blurb on the Samsung SGH-i917 Cetus, a yet-to-be announced Microsoft Windows Phone 7 device. The site lists the device as having a 4-inch 800 x 480 AMOLED touchscreen display, a 5 megapixel camera with a second VGA one, WiFi 802.11b/g/n, and microUSB v.2.0. Little else is currently known about the phone.

RIM and Samsung see large phone market share growth year-over-year

Research firm International Data Corporation (IDC) has released its most recent Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker report. It found that 317.5 million units were shipped during the second quarter of 2010, and that RIM and Samsung gained a large amount of market share since the same quarter in 2009.

A new Strategy Analytics report showed continued growth of mobile phone sales worldwide during the second quarter of 2010, and found that a total of 308 million units were shipped during the quarter.
