"Qi" wireless power standard defined

The Wireless Power Consortium has finalized a new low power wireless standard called Qi. The specification is available to members of the Wireless Power Consortium now and will be available to everyone on August 30th, 2010. According to Ars Technica, the specification, dubbed "Qi," uses up to 5 watts of power, which is enough to charge the many gadgets we use that typically charge via a USB plug. Manufacturers with devices certified to use the standard in the future will be able to publish the "Qi" logo on their boxes.

Yahoo updates Flickr for iPhone with multiasking support

Today Yahoo announced that it has updated its Flickr for iPhone application. In addition to an enhanced UI, Flickr version 1.2 now supports multiasking, as well as HD-video uploads. The multiasking support means Flickr users can upload their photos and videos in the background while doing other things. Flickr will also now allow users to share videos or photos with their Twitter followers.

AT&T to fix Apple iPhone 4 upload glitch

AT&T said today that it will fix a high speed uplink packet access (HSUPA) glitch that cut some upload speeds for Apple iPhone 4 and laptop modem owners. AT&T is working with Alcatel Lucent SA, which makes the equipment, to get the problem fixed within the next two to three weeks.

AT&T WiFi Hotzone spreads to Charlotte, Chicago coming soon

Today AT&T announced that it has expanded its WiFi Hotzone pilot project to downtown Charlotte, North Carolina. It's the second hotspot that AT&T has launched in order to supplement its mobile broadband coverage in areas with high 3G use. The first Hotzone launched in Time Square in New York City. AT&T plans to launch a Chicago Hotzone in the coming weeks.

Google Maps 4.4 for Android adds Places feature for local search

Today Google updated its Maps for Android application to version 4.4. Google Maps 4.4 adds local search using a dedicated Places icon on your desktop. Places lets you search for nearby restaurants, coffee, bars, hotels, attractions, ATMs, Gas Stations, and more. Places supports voice search queries, and even specific place names. The included Place Pages support provides information on each location such as reviews, prices, hours, and more. Maps 4.4 supports Android 1.6 devices and newer and is available in the Android market. The update will come soon to BlackBerry.

Jailbreaking Apple iPhone OK, says Library of Congress

Today the Library of Congress' Copyright Office said that it's legal for owners of smartphones, including the Apple iPhone, to root or jailbreak their devices in order to install unapproved applications on their devices.

Sprint expands NextMail client support to all Sprint phones

Today Sprint announced that its NextMail client, powered by Pacific DataVision, is now available on all Sprint phones, including high end smartphones. NextMail lets mobile professionals send recorded voice messages to up to 50 email addresses, or via text message to 50 devices. With NextMail Professional, it's also possible to include pictures and location information inside the message. NextMail costs $7.50 per month per user and Next Mail Professional is $19.99 per month per user.

Eye-Fi recently announced a new Eye-Fi Mobile Center client for the iPhone, BlackBerry, and Android smartphones. Eye-Fi Mobile Center lets you access your Eye-Fi account to view your Eye-Fi history, settings, and the last 7 days of shared content. Eye-Fi owners can access the Eye-Fi Mobile Center by visiting m.center.eye.fi from their smartphones.

Google changes Android Market agreement to support carrier billing

According to a post on Google's official Android Developers Blog, the company has made some changes to the Android Market Developer Distribution Agreement. The changes, which include naming "authorized carriers" as an indemnified party, seem to suggest that direct carrier billing for applications is on its way. This would allow customers on supported networks to buy apps from the Market and have them charged to their phone bills. Developers have 30 days to accept the new terms.

HTC to use Sony Super LCD displays in its Desire, Nexus One smartphones

Today HTC announced that it will use new Super LCD (SLCD) displays in its Desire and Nexus One Android powered smartphones. Super LCD offers improved power management over earlier LCD panels, as well as better viewing angles enabled by Sony's VSPEC III technology. HTC says that the switch to Super LCD will allow the company to better meet demand. HTC has recently seen shortages of Samsung's AMOLED displays, causing longer wait times for carriers to receive phones.

Acer Stream Android smartphone landing on August 9th

Today Acer announced that its high-end Android smartphone, the Stream, which was originally announced in May, will be available on August 9th. The phone sports a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, a 3.7-inch AMOLED touchscreen display, and a 5 megapixel camera, among other high-end specs. The Acer Stream will be available exclusively through online retailer eXpansys for £399 ($617).
