Nokia C3, E5, C6 phones landing on U.S. shores

Nokia has posted the Nokia C6, E5, and C3 smartphones on its website as "coming soon," for the United States. The E5 and C6 S60 powered smartphones, and the C3 feature phone, will be available unlocked for for $129, $259, and $309, respectively. The phones will be available for preorder but ship dates aren't currently listed.

Sprint reports first wireless subscriber growth in three years in Q2 2010 financial results

Today Sprint reported its financial results for the second quarter of 2010. The carrier saw its first total net wireless subscriber growth in three years, with a gain of 111,000 net subscribers in the second quarter.

RIM AT&T BlackBerry event next Tuesday, OS 6.0, 9800 QWERTY slider smartphone could be released

We just received an invitation to an event hosted by AT&T and Research in Motion (RIM) next Tuesday morning. Rumor has it that we could see the official OS 6.0 launch as well as the BlackBerry 9800, a device rumored to have a slider QWERTY formfactor. We'll keep you up to date next Tuesday morning.

Citigroup Apple iPhone app contained security flaw, fix now available

Citigroup Inc. recently announced that its Apple iPhone application, free to its customers, had a security flaw in it that affected approximately 117,600 Citigroup customers who have used the application since March 2009, The Wall Street Journal reported. The application was saving critical information, such as security codes, account numbers, and more. However, Citigroup doesn't think that the information was stolen by hackers, and says that it has updated the application to a newer version that fixes the glitch.

Dell Streak Android smartphone retailing for $299.99 through AT&T, $549 off contract

Today Dell revealed the launch details of its Dell Streak tablet-esque Android powered smartphone. The device is available today for pre-registrants for $299.99 with 2-year AT&T contract or $549.99 without. Those who pre-registered should get a link to purchase the device, via email, today. The Dell Streak is powered by a 1GHz processor, sports a 5-inch touchscreen display, and runs on AT&T's 7.2Mbps HSPA 3G network.

T-Mobile tempts first HSPA+ smartphone with teaser page

Today T-Mobile launched a new teaser page for its upcoming HSPA+ smartphone, which will be the first on the market. The site shows a shrouded smartphone, which appears to offer a full touchscreen, and only says "Later this year, the first HSPA+ smartphone from T-Mobile will shape the next generation. Yours." There's also a form that you can fill out for more information as it becomes available.

Orange: HTC Hero Android 2.1 Eclair update to start rolling out next week

In a statement posted on Orange UK's website, HTC said: "We apologize for the delay in Orange Hero customers receiving their Eclair update. Testing the update across European markets took longer than anticipated. However, we hope to receive final approval by the end of the week and Orange handsets should start updating from next week."

Licensing service for Android developers now available

Today Google, through Android Developers, announced a new licensing service for Android developers that will help block unauthorized use of applications. The service is free and targets apps running on Android 1.5 or higher, and it an included library can be used to check with the Android Market licensing service to determine if a user is authorized to use the app or not. Part of the reason for the move could be that Android 2.2 "Froyo" will allow apps to be installed on a microSD card. Google hopes to replace the Android Market copy-protection code with the licensing service during the next few months.

Apple says iPhone jailbreaking can still void your warranty, despite legalization

Yesterday The Library of Congress made a few amendments to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, one of which is that it's legal for smartphone owners, including those that own the iPhone, to jailbreak their devices. Apple responded to Cult of Mac with response on whether or not jailbreaking would still void the warranty, and said: "Apple's goal has always been to insure that our customers have a great experience with their iPhone and we know that jailbreaking can severely degrade the experience. As we've said before, the vast majority of customers do not jailbreak their iPhones as this can violate the warranty and can cause the iPhone to become unstable and not work reliably."

Wal-Mart to offer AT&T powered Straight Talk prepaid plans

AT&T has confirmed that it will offer service for Wal-Mart's Straight Talk prepaid plans, The Wall Street Journal is reporting. The current Straight Talk plans, which launched in October, run on Verizon Wireless' network. Specific phone models and availability have not yet been announced.

Nokia's C6 QWERTY touchscreen smartphone is now available from the company's online store. This 3G capable handset offers users a 3.2-inch touchscreen display with a fully backlit slide-out QWERTY keyboard, a 5-megapixel camera with autofocus and flash, as well as quick access to email, navigation, and social networks. The C6 is available now in either black or white for 289 GBP.

Apple sued for iPad overheating in warm environments

A class action lawsuit, named Baltazar v. Apple Inc., has been filed against Apple in an Oakland, California federal court, Bloomberg is reporting. The lawsuit says that Apple's iPad "overheats so quickly under common weather conditions," that it "does not live up to the reasonable consumer's expectations created by Apple." This is a separate lawsuit from an earlier one in June that was filed against Apple and AT&T for switching up the 3G data plans.

FCC launches Consumer Help Center website

Today the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) launched a new Consumer Help Center website that provides consumers with telecommunications information. The website will also provide purchasing tips, and will allow consumers to leave comments or file complaints. "Here, in one place, consumers can do a number of things such as read about consumer issues, get practical advice for avoiding problems, file a complaint, comment on our rulemakings, or read what our FCC experts are saying in our Consumer Blog," Joel Gurin, chief of the consumer and governmental affairs bureau of the FCC said. The Consumer Help Center is available at www.fcc.com/consumers.

Nokia E5 S60 powered QWERTY smartphone headed to Orange U.K.

Orange U.K. has posted the S60 powered Nokia E5 on its website as "coming soon." The Nokia E5 sports HSDPA 7.2Mbps 3G connectivity, a 5 megapixel camera, FM radio, Bluetooth, and a full QWERTY keyboard. Orange U.K. says that the device will be available for free with select plans, but did not provide an exact availability date.

HTC expands presence to China with HTC branded Android and Windows Mobile smartphones

Today HTC announced that it has expanded its brand to China by releasing new TD-SCDMA HTC branded phones through a partnership with China Mobile and China's largest electronics retailer, GOME Electrical Appliances Ltd. HTC will launch four HTC Sense enabled smartphones, including the HTC Tianxi, HTC Tianyi, HTC Desire, and HTC Wildfire. HTC did not discuss specifics as to when the phones would be available, or for how much.
