Mozilla outs Firefox Sync and Firefox Home application for iPhone

Today Mozilla announced Firefox Sync and the Firefox Home for iPhone. Firefox Sync is a named version of Firefox Weave and will be an opt-in feature of Firefox 4. It will allow you to work on a desktop version of Firefox, and then begin surfing where you left off if you move to another computer. Firefox Home for iPhone allows Firefox Sync users to pick up their browsing session right from their iPhone, and it syncs up your Firefox Awesome Bar as well. Mozilla wasn't specific on when the application would be available.

Motorola to become Motorola Mobility and Motorola Solutions

On February 11, 2010 Motorola announced that it was planning to split into two independently traded companies by the first quarter of 2011. Today, the company announced that it has filed an initial Form 10 Registration Statement with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Motorola Devices and Home businesses will separate from Motorola and will be called Motorola Mobility. Motorola Inc., will become Motorola Solutions and will house the Enterprise MObility Solutions and Networks divisions.

Intel and Nokia MeeGo Linux project baseline source code now available for developers

The MeeGo project has announced that the MeeGo baseline source code is now available for developers. The code is being developed as MeeGo 1.1 which the project hopes to release in October. Labeled "Handset Day 1," the project includes MeeGo APIs, handset reference UI and applications, the MeeGo Core OS, and hardware adaptation support for Intel Atom-based handsets and the ARM-based Nokia N900.

Verizon Wireless to pay $21 million to customers in class-action lawsuit settlement

At the decision of a California appeals court, Verizon Wireless will have to shell out $21 million to over 175,000 of its subscribers. The original complaint came in 2008 when customers filed suit against Verizon Wireless after the carrier changed its early-termination fees. The Wall Street Journal says that's about $87.50 per person. Verizon Wireless also increased its early-termination fees last year.

Verizon Wireless outs Open Catalog Program for Brew developers

The catalog will help cut down developer's time to market and lets them market directly to consumers, and it will be available for a variety Verizon multimedia handsets and feature phones that support the Brew platform. Nokia rolling out 6700 Classic update

Nokia said today that it is beginning to roll-out a Nokia 6700 Classic software update that will begin landing on phones during the next couple of days. Verizon sw13.10 adds free voice-guided, turn-by-turn navigation with Ovi Maps 1.4, and also contains some camera software improvements. Bluetooth audio connections were enhanced to sound more robust and reliable, and Nokia also improved the phone's overall stability.

HP completes Palm acquisition, plans webOS powered smartphones, slate PCs, and netbooks

Today HP announced that it has completed its $1.2 billion acquisition of Palm for $5.70 per share. HP believes its global scale and financial strength paired with Palm's webOS operating system will help HP compete more aggressively in the $100 billion smartphone market. Palm will remain responsible for webOS software development and webOS based products that will range from smartphones to slate PCs (tablets) and netbooks.

Yahoo updates Yahoo Mail and Yahoo News with HTML5 for iPhone and iPod touch

Today Yahoo announced new versions of its Yahoo Mail and Yahoo News clients for the iPhone and iPod touch. The latest vesions were built on HTML 5 to provide a "faster and more sophisticated mobile browsing experience." With Yahoo Mail customers can manage folders, compose rich text messages, access folders offline, and surface photos and video attachments directly from their email. Yahoo News has a new layout that includes animated visual effects, as well as photos, slideshows, video, and more. Yahoo plans to provide this upgraded experience to additional devices in the future.

Yahoo releases new Mail and Messenger Android apps

Today Yahoo announced that it has announced new Android applications for Yahoo Mail.. and Yahoo Messenger. The applications run on Android 2.0 and newer, and will provide push notifications of new emails, robust email search, the ability to share photos, view and download attachments, and more. Yahoo messenger allows you to send IMs or SMS messages, view status updates, or share photos. The applications are free and are currently available in the Android Market.

Nokia to launch first MeeGo product by end of year

Speaking to The Wall Street Journal, Nokia's new mobile solutions chief said that his the MeeGo operating system will be a "key asset" to Nokia. He also added that Nokia plans to launch the first MeeGo devices towards teh end of the year, which could include tablets and samrtphones. MeeGo is an operating system that was created by Intel and Nokia when the two firms merged the Linux-based Moblin operating system and Nokia's Maemo project.

Apple pushes out Exchange ActiveSync iOS 4 patch

Apple has pushed out a new iOS 4 update that's supposed to fix some issues involving Exchange ActiveSync on the iPhone. Regarding the initial errors, Apple noted that "immediately after updating iOS 4, some users may notice Exchange ActiveSync Mail, Contacts, or Calendars do not sync, or sync very slowl. In addition, some Exchange Server administrators may notice their servers running slowly." The patch should fix these problems.

Starbucks now offering free WiFi

LG announces Application Store for feature phones and smartphones

Today LG announced that it's opening a new application store that will provide apps for LG feature phones and smartphones in 33 countries. The store will offer over 3,000 applications via a website, and about half of the apps will be specifically targeted at feature phones. The store currently only supports Windows Mobile smartphones, but will offer Android applications by the end of the year.

Orange U.K. and T-Mobile U.K. officially integrated as Everything Everywhere

Today Orange U.K. and T-Mobile U.K. announced that the two companies are now officially integrated into one firm known as Everything Everywhere Limited. "Today we have created the country's biggest communications company, and as the new leader in the industry, it is our aspiration to give our customers instant access to the world around them, to everything everywhere, through both of our brands, Orange and T-Mobile," Tom Alexander, chief executive of Everything Everywhere, said.
