Cincinnati Bell launches Android 1.6 powered Blaze smartphone, Nexus One

Cincinnati Bell recently launched the Blaze, an Android 1.6 powered smartphone that is retailing for $99.99 with a 2-year contract. The carrier is also offering support for the Nexus One, but is redirecting sales to Google's online phone store.

SIRIUS XM Radio for Android launches

Today SIRIUS XM Radio launched its Android application. It provides access to over 120 SIRIUS XM channels, and after a 7-day free-trial requires a monthly SIRIUS XM subscription. The software is said to work on the DROID Incredible, DROID, DROID ERIS, HEro, G1, and CLIQ, so it appears that it will work on all Android releases so far.

Samsung: T-Mobile SGH-t939 Behold II not upgradeable beyond Android 1.6

We reached out to Samsung for official word on whether or not the Samsung SGH-t939 Behold II would be upgraded to Android 2.0+. Samsung responded: "Samsung and T-Mobile USA are planning to update the Behold II to Android 1.6 which provides access to Google Maps Navigation, Google Voice Search capability, and quick search for Android. The update will also supply additional benefits including Swype, an improved media player, updated core Android applications, and improved Bluetooth capabilities. However, the Behold II is not upgradeable beyond Android 1.6."

Palm Pre Plus now available from O2 UK

The webOS-powered Palm Pre Plus smartphone with Wi-Fi is now available to O2 UK customers. The phone is equipped with a 3.1-inch touchscreen, 8GB of internal storage, and a full QWERTY keyboard. It is now available free on contract from O2.

Google completes acquisition of AdMob

Google recently announced that it has finished its acquisition of AdMob, a mobile advertising firm. AdMob has previously served ads inside mobile apps on Android devices and on the iPhone platform. Google and AdMob have already announced "click-to-call" mobile ads to developers that will allow mobile phone users to click an ad directly to place a call. Google purchased AdMob for $750 million.

Facebook for Android software development kit released

Facebook has officially announced its software development kit (SDK) for Android, which the company demoed at Google I/O last week. It provides authentication using OAuth 2.0, requests to the new Graph API, and lets developers integrate the ability to publish stories from inside other apps to Facebook. The SDK is available for free now.

Two Motorola Android smartphones headed to Verizon Wireless in July

Two new Motorola Android smartphones will be landing on Verizon Wireless in July, The Wall Street Journal is reporting. The phones will launch as part of a new deal between Motorola and Verizon Wireless in which Verizon will heavily promote Motorola's new phones. The devices could have the the DROID label, which Verizon licenses from Lucasfilm Ltd. and applies to its high-end smartphones. Verizon spent $100 million marketing the original Motorola DROID, and Motorola co-CEO Sanjay Jha said "We will introduce new DROID products in the Verizon franchise," without providing more details. Motorola currently loses an average of $22 for every handset it ships.
