California native Lauren Rosenberg is suing Google after being struck by a car when following Google Maps directions that suggested she walk down a rural Utah state highway with no sidewalks to get to her desired address.

Skype updates Apple iPhone client with free 3G calling

Skype has released the 2.0 version of its Apple iPhone client that will allow Skype to Skype calls over a 3G connection. The calls will be free to make through the end of the year. Skype will announce pricing details in the coming months.

Cincinnati Bell launches Android 1.6 powered Blaze smartphone, Nexus One

Cincinnati Bell recently launched the Blaze, an Android 1.6 powered smartphone that is retailing for $99.99 with a 2-year contract. The carrier is also offering support for the Nexus One, but is redirecting sales to Google's online phone store.

SIRIUS XM Radio for Android launches

Today SIRIUS XM Radio launched its Android application. It provides access to over 120 SIRIUS XM channels, and after a 7-day free-trial requires a monthly SIRIUS XM subscription. The software is said to work on the DROID Incredible, DROID, DROID ERIS, HEro, G1, and CLIQ, so it appears that it will work on all Android releases so far.

Samsung: T-Mobile SGH-t939 Behold II not upgradeable beyond Android 1.6

We reached out to Samsung for official word on whether or not the Samsung SGH-t939 Behold II would be upgraded to Android 2.0+. Samsung responded: "Samsung and T-Mobile USA are planning to update the Behold II to Android 1.6 which provides access to Google Maps Navigation, Google Voice Search capability, and quick search for Android. The update will also supply additional benefits including Swype, an improved media player, updated core Android applications, and improved Bluetooth capabilities. However, the Behold II is not upgradeable beyond Android 1.6."

Palm Pre Plus now available from O2 UK

The webOS-powered Palm Pre Plus smartphone with Wi-Fi is now available to O2 UK customers. The phone is equipped with a 3.1-inch touchscreen, 8GB of internal storage, and a full QWERTY keyboard. It is now available free on contract from O2.

Google completes acquisition of AdMob

Google recently announced that it has finished its acquisition of AdMob, a mobile advertising firm. AdMob has previously served ads inside mobile apps on Android devices and on the iPhone platform. Google and AdMob have already announced "click-to-call" mobile ads to developers that will allow mobile phone users to click an ad directly to place a call. Google purchased AdMob for $750 million.

Facebook for Android software development kit released

Facebook has officially announced its software development kit (SDK) for Android, which the company demoed at Google I/O last week. It provides authentication using OAuth 2.0, requests to the new Graph API, and lets developers integrate the ability to publish stories from inside other apps to Facebook. The SDK is available for free now.

Two Motorola Android smartphones headed to Verizon Wireless in July

Two new Motorola Android smartphones will be landing on Verizon Wireless in July, The Wall Street Journal is reporting. The phones will launch as part of a new deal between Motorola and Verizon Wireless in which Verizon will heavily promote Motorola's new phones. The devices could have the the DROID label, which Verizon licenses from Lucasfilm Ltd. and applies to its high-end smartphones. Verizon spent $100 million marketing the original Motorola DROID, and Motorola co-CEO Sanjay Jha said "We will introduce new DROID products in the Verizon franchise," without providing more details. Motorola currently loses an average of $22 for every handset it ships.

AT&T says 40 percent of iPhone sales are to corporate users

Research in Motion may have more company in the corporate sector than previously thought. Despite not sharing exactly how many iPhones it sold since the start of the year, AT&T told Reuters that 40 percent of its iPhone sales are to business users. Nearly 50 percent of its total revenues are also from corporate customers, AT&T's head of business services, Ron Spears, said.

Google has announced that it's now offering its Buzz service to more users by offering an XHTML version, which can be accessed from mobile devices, including Android pre-2.0, Blackberry OS, Windows Mobile, and Nokia's S60. Google Buzz lets you share photos, videos, links, and status updates about what you're doing or what's on your mind while on-the-go.

Verizon Wireless LTE 4G network will have tiered pricing options

During a Barclays investor conference this week, Verizon Wireless' CEO, Lowell McAdam, said that Verizon Wireless will introduce tiered pricing plans for Verizon's fourth generation long term evolution (LTE) network. He explained that customers should be able to buy "buckets' of data, because customers "will have four or five or perhaps even more devices that will connect to the network." Verizon expects to save money with its new 4G network, as it should cost one-half to one-third of the price it takes to carry the same amount of data over its 3G network.

webOS designer Matias Duarte joins Google's Android team

Earlier today we reported that webOS designer Matias Duarte left Palm and that he may have been headed to Google. According to Engadget, Duarte is now the User Experience Director for Android. He'll be working with Andy Rubin, VP of mobile platforms at Google.

Apple slips past Microsoft as world's biggest tech company

Apple is now the largest tech company in the world, in terms of market capitalization, according to the Associated Press. Apple surpassed Microsoft when its shares closed at $244.11, with a $222 billion market cap, yesterday. Microsoft's shares closed at $25.01, for a $219 billion market cap.

Fring for Android chat client launches, supports video calls

Today Fring announced a version of its popular Fring chat client for Android devices. The service supports Skype, MSN Messenger, Google Talk, AIM, ICQ, Facebook, and Twitter in one client. Depending on the chat service used, it can also support video calling, provided that you have a good enough data or WiFi connection.

Best Buy relaunches mobile site for online phone purchases

Today Best Buy announced that it has relaunched its mobile site, BestBuy.com/Mobile. The new website now offers customers the ability to purchase phones with a contract and then choose a store to pick it up in, or have it shipped directly to them. There's also a new Instant Ship option which that customers can use if a device isn't available in a particular store. Best Buy also has a dedicated call center for shopping assitance.

webOS designer Matias Duarte leaves Palm, could be headed to Google

Matias Duarte, the vice president of human interface and user experience at Palm (now owned by HP), has left the company according to All Things D. Duarte, also the former vice president of experience design at Helio and the director of design at Danger, worked on developing Palm's webOS UI and was with the company for 2 years and 9 months, according to his LinkedIn profile. There are reports that he's headed to Google to work on Android, although that is not yet confirmed.

Apple iPad now arriving on doorsteps in the U.K.

Mozilla working on Firefox Home browser sync for iPhone

Mozilla has announced that it is working on an iPhone application called Firefox Home. When you leave your computer, Mozilla wants you to be able to pick-up your browsing session right where you left off, and so the app is based on the Firefox Sync technology (formerly known as Wave Sync), and will let iPhone owners view their Firefox browsing history, bookmarks, and tabs from their last session. It also includes Firefox's "Awesome Bar" for quickly accessing your favorite websites. It has not yet been submitted to the App Store, and Mozilla says there will be more to come.

The beta version of Bitbop, an application backed by Fox Mobile, is now available for download on select BlackBerry devices. Bitbop can be thought of as Hulu for your phone; you can use it to stream one of 25 TV stations including Comedy Central, Fox, Discovery, National Geographic, NBC, and more. Bitbop plans to launch a commercial free version with a $9.99 monthly subscription plan, as well as on-demand movies in the future. The software will run on the BlackBerry Bold 9000, BlackBerry Bold 9700, BlackBerry Curve 8900, and the BlackBerry Tour 9630.
