Chrome for Android adds new security features

Google has made its Chrome for Android more secure with a new update that reinforces Chrome's sandbox technology. The latest version of Chrome adds security features that prevent malicious websites from affecting the browser, and automatically contains threats on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. The update also adds new YouTube video controls when viewing a video in full-screen mode, and continues playback when the phone wakes from being locked. iOS 6 update will arrive September 19th to existing iPhone, iPad, iPod touch models

Apple has announced that it will release its iOS 6 update for existing phone, tablet, and music player models on September 19th. The update will be available for the iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, the new iPad, iPad 2, and iPod Touch (4th generation). Not all features will be made available to all devices because of hardware requirements or incompatibilities. Apple has announced that its iPhone 4 will be available for free on a two-year agreement. Due to the pending launch of the iPhone 5, Apple has dropped the price of the 8GB iPhone 4 and the 16GB iPhone 4S, which now costs only $99. Today's announcement makes the barrier to entry for Apple iPhone products much smaller for users who are willing to sign a two-year agreement. It also makes older models of the iPhone more competitive with the low and midrange Android handsets carriers sell to customers who don't want newer high-end smartphones.

Apple App Store has 700,000 apps, the average person uses 100 or more

Apple CEO Tim Cook has announced that the App Store now has more than 700,000 apps available for download on an iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch. Cook revealed that of the 700,000 apps available, more than 250,000 are apps made specifically for the iPad. He called the App Store "The Most Vibrant App Ecosystem on the Planet" when he noted that 90 percent of apps are downloaded every month. The average customer uses more than 100 apps on an iPhone or iPad. Apple remains ahead of all rivals in terms of app store titles and downloads.

Apple has sold more than 400 million iOS devices

At its iPhone 5 launch event today, Apple noted that it has sold more than 400 million iOS devices through June 2012. The combined muscle of the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad have made Apple the most successful tech company in the world, and the sales total will climb even higher once Apple begins selling the iPhone 5. Apple only revealed its sales through June, so figures from July and August may add several million more to the tally. In what was surely part of an effort to one-up Apple's event, Google announced earlier today that it has activated more than 500 million Android devices since 2008.

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean heading to Galaxy Nexus in Canada now

Samsung Galaxy Nexus owners in Canada are reporting that they are now being prompted to update their phone to Android 4.1. Galaxy Nexus owners with phones tied to Bell, Fido, Rogers, TELUS, and WIND have all informed Canadian tech blog MobileSyrup that their phone has been updated to Android 4.1.1. Users can check if the update is available to their phone by pressing Menu > Settings > About phone > system software updates > Check now.

Samsung forecasts 30 million Galaxy S III sales and 20 million for Galaxy Note II

Google has activated more than 500 million Android devices

At the launch of the Motorola DROID RAZR line of phones, Google Chairman Eric Schmidt announced that there have been more than 480 million Android devices activated to date. Android Product Manager Hugo Barra has since confirmed that Google has officially activated more than 500 million new devices. The activations count only new phones and tablets that use Google Mobile services, which means the Kindle Fire isn't included in the tally. It took just under four years for Google to activate its first 500 million devices, but the next 500 million will take considerably less time if Android's 1.3 million daily activation rate holds steady.
