Samsung Galaxy Tab pre-orders start at Best Buy Posted: 26 Oct 2010 04:55 AM PDT The Samsung Galaxy Tab, a 7-inch Android 2.2 tablet, is now available for pre-order from Best Buy. Best Buy is selling both the Sprint and Verizon Wireless version of the device, and both models are priced at $599.99. Facebook for BlackBerry updated to version 1.9 Posted: 25 Oct 2010 10:01 AM PDT Today RIM announced that Facebook for BlackBerry has been updated to version 1.9. The latest iteration includes a dedicated inbox for messages, which fetches the latest 30 messages. It also offers Facebook Search for finding friends and universal search on BlackBerry 6 devices. The update provides an enhanced friends list and page list for viewing your friends Facebook photos and pages in a list form. The navigation bar was also redesigned; you can view your own profile and also click Search and Message options in the new nav bar. Garmin told Reuters that it will decide its smartphone future "over the next few quarters," and if it finds that smartphone sales aren't meeting expectations, it's ready to pull the plug on that market. Google engineer dubs Android 2.3 "next major release" Posted: 25 Oct 2010 06:46 AM PDT While discussing some Wi-Fi login bugs on Google's Android code forums, an anonymous Google engineer said that a fix for the bug will be made available in the next "major release of Android." In an earlier post, the engineer confirmed that "Android 2.3 is a major release," for Android. There's still no word on when that version of Android will be announced, of it it's even the confirmed Gingerbread release. Google did recently raise a large statue of a Gingerbread man outside its headquarters, which could imply a release is imminent. Read the full story here. |
Wi-Fi Direct offers device-to-device wireless connections Posted: 25 Oct 2010 06:21 AM PDT Today the Wi-Fi alliance announced that it will begin certifying devices that are capable of making device-to-device Wi-Fi connections. Those devices will be dubbed "CERTIFIED Wi-Fi Direct." Connecting directly using Wi-Fi will allow Wi-Fi devices to sync, share, print, or game with one another easily. "We designed Wi-Fi Direct to unleash a wide variety of applications which require device connections, but do not need the internet or even a traditional network. Wi-Fi Direct empowers users to connect devices - when, where and how they want to, and our certification program delivers products that work well together, regardless of the brand," said Edgar Figueroa, CEO of the Wi-Fi Alliance. The Starbucks Card Mobile application is available for BlackBerry, iPhone, and iPod touch devices, and lets Starbucks customers make purchases using their phones."With the expansion of mobile payment to New York City, we expect to see more and more customers trading their plastic Starbucks Cards for the digital version on their mobile phone. Amazon Kindle ebook sharing coming soon Posted: 25 Oct 2010 04:53 AM PDT Amazon recently announced that it will begin making Kindle newspapers and magazines available on devices such as smartphones with the free Kindle reader software installed. Amazon will first deploy the functionality on the iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch in the "coming weeks," with Kindle for Android and other apps to get the update down the road. Amazon will also introduce ebook sharing for Kindle later this year. That means each book can be lent once for a 14 day period. Whether a book can be loaned or not will be up to the publisher. Adobe outs AIR 2.5 for iOS, Android, and BlackBerry Posted: 25 Oct 2010 04:48 AM PDT Today Adobe announced Adobe AIR 2.5, which was developed to run on everything from smartphones and tablets to desktop computers. Adobe AIR 2.5 allows developers to use their existing Flash, Flash Builder, and Flex tools to create and deploy applications across those aforementioned platforms. Adobe said that Acer, HTC, Motorola, and RIM will ship smartphones and tablets with the Adobe AIR 2.5 runtime preinstalled later this year and in early 2011. Read the full story here. |
