Fring launches fringOut for Android smartphones Posted: 05 Oct 2010 05:06 AM PDT Today Fring announced that its low-cost fringOut service, which allows users to place calls to phones worldwide with rates starting at $0.01 per minute, is now available for Android users. fringOut requires that you have the latest version of Fring, which is available for free in the Android market. fringOut works on WiFi, 3G, and 4G networks. Samsung demos WiMAX 2 in Japan with 330Mbps downloads Posted: 05 Oct 2010 05:00 AM PDT Samsung is demoing a next-generation WiMAX 2 network as part of the CEATEC trade show in Japan. The WiMAX 2 trial network is based on IEEE 802.16m and has a reported download throughput speed of 330Mbps. That's enough speed to allow Samsung to show full-HD 3D videos, and 16 full HD videos on four big screen TVs, simultaneously. The WiMAX 2 standard is expected to be finalized in November. "WiMAX 2 provides strong integration compatibility with deployed Mobile WiMAX solutions. It also allows current Mobile WiMAX operators to migrate their solutions to WiMAX 2 by upgrading channel cards or their system software," Samsung said. Read the full story here. |
Qualcomm to shut down FLO TV service Posted: 04 Oct 2010 01:14 PM PDT Qualcomm is starting to end its FLO TV service, according to a report from RCRWireless. Thankfully, customers on AT&T and Verizon Wireless, who use the service on FLO TV capable phones, won't be affected just yet. The service is expected to stop "in the next few months." Qualcomm's FLO TV store, which sold a standalone unit, is also no longer available. FLO TV was only available on a few feature phones, and it required users to pay a monthly service fee. Sanyo Vero flip phone now available from Sprint Posted: 04 Oct 2010 12:42 PM PDT The Sanyo Verois now available from Sprint. The Vero is a budget friendly flip phone that offers users a basic feature set that includes a 2.4-inch QVGA external display and a 1.3-inch OLED external display. Twitter CEO Evan Williams steps down Posted: 04 Oct 2010 12:36 PM PDT Today Twitter's CEO, Evan Williams, announced that he is stepping down from his role. Williams made his announcement on the official Twitter blog and said that Dick Costolo, Twitter's current chief operating officer, will serve as the firm's CEO. Williams said that he will be sticking around to focus on Twitter's product strategy. "During his year at Twitter, [Costolo] has been a critical leader in devising and executing our revenue efforts, while simultaneously and effectively making the trains run on time in the office. Cisco exec lands Skype CEO job Posted: 04 Oct 2010 12:18 PM PDT Skype is appointing Tony Bates, a senior vice president with Cisco, as its next CEO, Tech Crunch is reporting. Skype's current CEO, John Silverman, has said that he is planning to step down from his role at the end of the month. Recently the wireless carrier has put up a teaser page for the device. The DEFY sports a 3.7-inch WVGA color display, runs Motorola's MOTOBLUR user interface, and can withstand the pressures of the outdoors with water immersion and dust resistance. Sprint's Samsung Epic 4G update rolling out with bug fixes Posted: 04 Oct 2010 09:57 AM PDT Sprint began pushing out a bug fix update for its Samsung Epic 4G smartphone. Sprint originally released the update on October 1, but pulled it quickly for unknown issues. The folks over on the Android Central forums have reported that Sprint has begun pushing the over-the-air update again. The update fixes battery drain that occurs when Wi-Fi is in standby, email upload speed lag, and now allows users to download songs from Amazon MP3 over 4G networks. Apple is selling four models of the iPad, with prices starting at $499. Target customers with a Target credit card are eligible for a 5-percent discount beginning on October 17. AT&T and T-Mobile will provide coverage in NYC subway stations Posted: 04 Oct 2010 05:36 AM PDT AT&T and T-Mobile customers may soon be able to place calls, and surf the web, below the streets of New York City. According to Bloomberg, AT&T and T-Mobile have both signed 10-year contracts with Transit Wireless LLC to provide service in 277 of New York City's subway stations. Transit Wireless spokesperson Pat Smith told Bloomberg that AT&T and T-Mobile can renew contracts four times in five year increments. The carriers could make an announcement as soon as this week.
