Nokia says Symbian^3 and Symbian^4 one "evolving platform," focuses efforts on Qt development

Today Nokia said that it is putting all of its eggs in the Qt development platform framework. It says any developers that use that platform will be able to publish apps to both Symbian or MeeGo devices. Nokia also said it will no longer talk about Symbian^3 or Symbian^4 and said that those operating systems are one evolving and improving platform.

Samsung Galaxy Tab lands on O2 UK November 1

O2 has announced that it will offer its customers Samsung's Galaxy Tab online and in stores starting November 1. The Tab, which runs on Google's Android 2.1 operating system, will be able to be purchased on all O2 Mobile Broadband tariffs and selected voice tariffs. MetroPCS offering 4G LTE in Detroit

Today MetroPCS announced that it is now offering its 4G LTE network in Detroit, Michigan. Detroit will join Las Vegas and Dallas-Forth Worth as the third MetroPCS 4G LTE network. MetroPCS will offer the Samsung Craft 4G LTE phone in its stores for $299 plus taxes and after a $50 mail-in-rebate. 4G LTE plans start at $55.

T-Mobile myTouch 3G gets Android 2.2 Froyo update

T-Mobile has said that it is beginning to roll out the Android 2.2 Froyo update for its myTouch 3G devices. The update is for the original myTouch 3G and will not be applied to the 3.5mm headphone jack version, or the myTouch 3G Fender Limited Edition. Updates fro those phones will come later. The software should be rolled out over-the-air to customers before October 31.

Today Apple reported its fourth quarter 2010 earnings. The firm noted record revenues and earnings and saw a 91-percent growth in iPhone sales over the fourth quarter of 2010. Steve Jobs also said that Apple "still [has] a few surprises left for the remainder of this calendar year." Steve Jobs wasn't specific on what those surprises would be, or if they could be related to mobile. However, Apple does have a "Back To the Mac" event this Wednesday, October 20.

Today AT&T launched the BlackBerry Pearl 3G and the BlackBerry Curve 3G, two of the carrier's latest smartphones from RIM. The Curve 3G offers a full QWERTY keyboard, a 2 megapixel camera, and 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi support. It's available for $99.99 with a new AT&T contract, and RIM has said it will upgrade its operating system to BlackBerry 6. The Pearl 3G is available for $149.99 with a new contract, and offers 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, a hybrid SureType QWERTY keyboard, and a 3.2 megapixel camera.

Motorola asks court to invalidate Apple patents

Motorola Mobility has asked a judge in the U.S. District Court in Delaware to invalidate Apple patents. Apple has filed a lawsuit against HTC claiming that HTC infringed on 20 of its patents, and Motorola is likely asking the judge to invalidate the patents to prevent Apple from filing a similar suit against Motorola.

Verizon Field Force Manager for Android now available

Today Verizon Wireless announced that its mobile worker management tool, Field Force Manager, is available for Android smartphones. The Android version has a redesigned user interface, bar code scanning, and search. It's available for all Verizon Wireless Android smartphones in two versions: limited and basic. The limited version provides information on field teams, including details on current and past travel history. The basic version includes all of the features of the limited edition, but costs $20 per month and adds location-validated mobile time cards and driving directions to job dispatches via Google Maps.

Rhapsody for BlackBerry smartphones now available

Today Rhapsody announced that its official Rhapsody for BlackBerry client is available. The software provides Rhapsody users with access to over 10.5 million songs and runs on BlackBerry OS 5 or newer. Rhapsody says that the application can also be controlled using a Bluetooth headset. The application can be downloaded from www.rhapsody.com for free and it will also soon be available in the BlackBerry App World. Rhapsody comes with a free seven day trial, but otherwise costs $9.99 per month.

Angry Birds for Android surpasses 2 million downloads

Rovio, the firm that developed the hit game Angry Birds, has announced that the Android version of its game has been downloaded over two million times since it launched on Friday, October 16. Samsung Wave II bada smartphone hitting UK in December

According to a tweet from Samsung's UK Twitter account, the Wave II will be available in the UK in December. The Wave II was announced earlier this month. It offers Samsung's latest bada 1.2 operating system, a 5 megapixel camera capable of recording 720p HD video, and a 3.7-inch 800 x 480 Super Clear LCD display. Carrier partners and pricing were not announced.
