Sprint buffs up network, plans to migrate iDEN customers to CDMA Posted: 01 Oct 2010 05:15 AM PDT Sprint's Bob Azzi, senior vice president of networks, recently spoke to an analyst with BTIG and said that the carrier plans to migrate its existing iDEN (Nextel) customers to CDMA as it "[maximizes] its spectrum holdings in the 800MHz, 1900MHz, and 2.5GHz bands," according to Fierce Wireless. Sprint's network project is expected to take 7 to 10 years to complete would see the number of towers in its network drop from its current 66,000 towers to 46,000 towers with higher power outputs. The company also plans to use its 800MHz spectrum for CDMA voice, and will offer push-to-talk over CDMA, something it had done in the past. Azzi noted that Sprint will not force its iDEN customers to migrate to CDMA. Read the full story here. |
Samsung terminates Symbian support Posted: 01 Oct 2010 05:13 AM PDT Samsung has announced that it will discontinue its Symbian support service beginning on December 31. It's also closing its Symbian developer forums, and suggests users stop posting new discussions no later than December 10. Samsung will continue to build smartphones on Android, Windows Phone 7, and its own bada operating system. Read the full story here. |
Sprint outs Samsung Epic 4G software update Posted: 01 Oct 2010 05:07 AM PDT Sprint has released an update for the Samsung Epic 4G. The software is said to fix battery drain that occurs when WiFi is in standby as well as email upload speed lag. After applying the update, users should be able to download from Amazon MP3 over 4G networks and should also see an increase in 3G upload speeds. The software should be automatically issued to all phones over-the-air, and the latest version is S:D700.0.5S.DI18. Due to some issues, Phandroid is reporting that the update was pulled briefly, although Sprint is expecting to reissue it as soon as possible. Read the full story here. |
Google Street View mobile now displaying all 7 continents Posted: 30 Sep 2010 01:48 PM PDT Today Google announced that mobile users can now use Google Street View to view areas on all seven continents. Google made the announcement after adding Street View support for Brazil, Ireland, and Antarctica's Half Moon Island. The feature should be available on all devices with Google Maps installed. T-Mobile advises against using Samsung Kies for Vibrant update Posted: 30 Sep 2010 12:41 PM PDT T-Mobile has issued a warning against using Samsung's PC-suite, Kies, to apply a recent firmware update to its Vibrant smartphone. Microsoft unveiling AT&T Windows Phone 7 devices from LG, HTC, and Samsung Posted: 30 Sep 2010 10:46 AM PDT Microsoft will announce three Windows Phone 7 devices on October 11th that will be available from AT&T in November, The Wall Street Journal is reporting. AT&T will reportedly be the exclusive first carrier of the phones, which are being manufactured by Samsung, LG, and HTC. AT&T will also market the devices for Microsoft. There isn't any information on the phones just yet, but Samsung's Windows Phone 7 device, the SGH-i917 Cetus, recently passed through the FCC. Read the full story here. |
Nokia sees rise in Ovi Store popularity Posted: 30 Sep 2010 10:41 AM PDT Today Nokia's vice president for media, Marco Argenti, said that there are now 2.3 million application downloads from its Ovi Store per day. That's up from 2 million downloads per day just a few weeks ago, according to Reuters. 200,000 people register to use the Ovi Store daily. Argenti reaffirmed Nokia's goals to bolster its U.S. presence, too. "We're very much part of this focus to re-conquer the United States. It's not just devices," he said. Read the full story here. |
AT&T reveals new GoPhone prepaid plans Posted: 30 Sep 2010 09:36 AM PDT Today AT&T announced new GoPhone prepaid calling plans which will go into effect on October 3. The new plans include an Unlimited Talk and Text option that will cost $60 per month (or $75 per month with a 200MB data package), and an Unlimited Daily Talk and Text Plan that costs $2 per day. Nokia N8 shipments delayed in U.S. Posted: 30 Sep 2010 07:12 AM PDT The Nokia N8 is shipping to customers that preordered the device today. However, the device isn't yet ready for the U.S. market, according to Information Week. Nokia has the N8 listed on its U.S. store as being available for preorder, and says that it will ship at the end of October. That's a month later than was originally posted. Information Week spoke to a Nokia salesperson who said that the N8 still needs software adjustments before it will be ready for the U.S. market. We are currently awaiting a response from Nokia. The device, which sports an R2-D2 color scheme, is available in select Verizon Wireless stores. It features R2-D2 sounds, ring tones, live wallpaper and a clock widget. It also comes with a "The Best of R2-D2" video. The DROID R2-D2 edition is available for $249 after a $100 mail-in-rebate. The database, available at http://www.google.com/phone, displays phones by manufacturer or wireless operator. Users can compare specifications of up to three phones side by side, too.
