Mozilla names new CEO

Today the Mozilla Foundation announced that Gary Kovacs will serve as its CEO. According to The Inquirer, Kovacs worked as a senior vice president of markets, solutions, and products at Sybase and has also worked at Adobe/Macromedia as a vice president of product marketing. His resume also includes a 10 year tenure at IBM. Kovacs is replacing John Lilly on November 8. Lilly left Mozilla for a firm called Greylock Partners. Mozilla recently made its first step into the Android platform by releasing its Firefox 4 beta browser.

HP recruits Nokia, Samsung execs for Palm webOS team

New MobileMe Calendar launched

Apple has launched the latest version of its MobileMe calendar software. The application offers a revamped user interface for day, week, and month views and allows users to create shared events. Study: U.S. teens average 3,339 text messages a month

A new study conducted by Nielsen during the second quarter of 2010 has found that text message usage among teens is on the rise. On average, teenagers in the United States send or receive and average of 3,339 text messages per month.

Dell Streak Android 2.2 Froyo update coming by year's end

Dell has released an official statement saying that it will update its Streak Android smartphone with Android 2.2 "Froyo" by the end of the year. In August Dell said that it would update the phone from 1.6 to 2.2 but did not provide a timeframe. It looks like Streak owners can look forward to an update in the coming months. "I can tell you that our target date is NOT December 31. In fact, the over-the-air update to 2.2 target date is much sooner than that," a Dell employee said on the Dell support forums.

Motorola to address DROID X Android 2.2 bugs

A Motorola employee has posted on the DROID X support forums noting a number of bugs that users have reported after updating their phones to Android 2.2. The employee noted that all of the bugs have been identified and fixes have been developed. The bugs will be addressed in a future update.

Windows Phone 7 pre-orders now available for O2, Orange, T-Mobile UK

Three of the five wireless operators in the UK have opened up pre-orders for their new Microsoft Windows Phone 7 offerings, which include the HTC HD7, the HTC 7 Mozart, and the Samsung Omnia 7. All three smartphones will be available to the public beginning on October 21.

Verizon Wireless not interested in Clearwire spectrum auction

Today Verizon Wireless said that it is not interested in purchasing some of the spectrum that Clearwire has up for auction. "We're not participating in the Clearwire auction," Nancy Stark, a Verizon Wireless spokeswoman, told Bloomberg. Yesterday Bloomberg reported that Verizon Wireless, as well as AT&T, Deutsche Telekom AG, Sprint Nextel, and Time Warner, were interested in bidding on the spectrum.

Best Buy adding HTC 7 Surround, white Samsung Fascinate, others to roster

Best Buy will begin offering some new smartphones in the coming weeks. It will sell special edition white versions of the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 and Samsung Fascinate. Facebook adds mobile-related security features

Yesterday Facebook added a couple of new security features that help users ensure that their accounts stay their own. A new one time password function can be accessed to get a temporary password for safely logging into a public computer by texting "otp" to 32665 in the USA. Facebook has also added the ability to log out your account's remote sessions to its Account Settings page, which can be done from either a smartphone or desktop computer.

Verizon to offer Apple iPad on October 28

Today Verizon Wireless announced that it will begin selling the Apple iPad on October 28. It will offer the Wi-Fi only version, and customers have the option to purchase it bundled with a Verizon MiFi 2200 Intelligent Mobile hotspot device. Verizon will also sell 1GB data plans for $20 per month.

Sam's Club to sell Apple iPhone and iPad

Opera Mobile browser for Android smartphone landing within a month

Today Opera announced that it will release its Opera Mobile web browser for Android within a month. Opera said that the browser will work on all versions of Android and will include hardware acceleration and pinch to zoom support. Hardware acceleration will provide more fluid interactions with websites. Opera doesn't have an exact date just yet, but promises that the application will be available on its website and in the Android Market within a month.

Cricket CROSSWAVE 3G mobile hotspot announced
