Microsoft sues Motorola for patent infringement Posted: 01 Oct 2010 11:52 AM PDT Today Microsoft said it has filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Motorola with the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington. The suit is "for infringement of nine Microsoft patents by Motorola's Android-based smartphones," Microsoft said. The patents involve email, calendar, contact, and scheduling sync. They are also related to how Motorola's devices notify applications of signal strength and battery power changes. "We have a responsibility to our customers, partners, and shareholders to safeguard the billions of dollars we invest each year in bringing innovative software products and services to market. Motorola needs to stop its infringement of our patented inventions in its Android smartphones," Microsoft said. Read the full story here. |

Google's Car Home Android application updated with customization options Posted: 01 Oct 2010 09:53 AM PDT Today Google announced that it has updated its Car Home Android application. The latest version makes it much easier to customize the Car Home homescreen. You can now create your own shortcuts, drag and drop them to the homescreen, and change the wallpaper. There's also an option to switch to Car Home automatically whenever your phone is connected to a Bluetooth device. Google made it easier for developers to create Car Mode versions of their applications easier, too, and also added a "Car applications," category to the Android Market. The latest version is only supported on Android 2.2 devices, and is available for free in the Android Market. Read the full story here. |
Microsoft promotes Andy Lees to president of Mobile Communications Business Posted: 01 Oct 2010 09:29 AM PDT Today Microsoft appointed three new presidents. Andy Lees, who has served as a senior vice president at Microsoft, is now president of mobile communications. Lees continued to lead the mobile communications business and reported directly to Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer after Robbie Bach and J Allard left in May. Don Mattrick is being promoted to the president of interactive entertainment, and Kurt DelBene will serve as president of the Office division of Microsoft. Read the full story here. |

The new countries include Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Hong Kong, Ireland, Israel, Mexico, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Russia, Singapore, South Korea, Sweden, Switzerland and Taiwan. Over the next two weeks, Android smartphone owners in 18 new countries will be able to purchase and download applications from the Android Market. Those countries are: Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Hong Kong, India, Ireland, Israel, Mexico, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Singapore, Sweden, and Taiwan. Nokia N8 preorders begin at Vodafone U.K. Posted: 01 Oct 2010 07:30 AM PDT Today Vodafone U.K. announced that it will carry Nokia's latest flagship smartphone, the Symbian^3 powered N8. The N8 sports a 12 megapixel camera with Xenon flash and auto-focus, 16GB of storage, and a 3.5-inch touchscreen. The Nokia N8 will be free with Vodafone plans starting at £29.37 ($46) per month. It offers a touchscreen and a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. The Torch 9800 is free on Vodafone with monthly plans starting at £40 ($63). Foursquare 2.0 launches for Android Posted: 01 Oct 2010 05:59 AM PDT Foursquare has updated its Android client to version 2.0. The latest foursquare software is "geared towards collecting and communicating your real-world experiences." Foursquare 2.0 splits the Tips and To-Dos features of the application and makes it easier to access both. There's also a new "Add to My foursquare," button which is embedded on websites. Should you see something online that you'd like to do later, you can click the button and it will be added to your mobile To-Do list. The update is available for free in the Android Market. India turns down RIM BlackBerry email solution Posted: 01 Oct 2010 05:39 AM PDT India has turned down a proposed solution from RIM in regards to encrypted email access, Reuters is reporting. India has threatened to ban BlackBerry smartphones from the country if it cannot access encrypted messages. RIM recently provided India with access to its BlackBerry Messenger service, however, India's law enforcement services are still unable to intercept chats from that service. RIM ran into glitches last week while trying to work on providing encrypted email access, too. Read the full story here. |
Samsung Galaxy Tab Android tablet hitting U.K. on November 1 Posted: 01 Oct 2010 05:22 AM PDT Samsung has announced that its Galaxy Tab Android tablet will be available in U.K. retailers in time for the holidays. The device will be on store shelves beginning on Monday November 1. All major wireless networks, and online at Carphone Warehouse and Dixons Store Group, will carry the Galaxy Tab. Opera Mobile 10.1 beta 2 offers an ARM optimized version of Opera's Carakan JavaScript Engine, and Opera claims it's able to execute JavaScript four times faster than before.
